thers opened their season with a
bang last week when they won the
Kitchener Selects school girls' Invi-
tational on Saturday; while hosting
their own Red and Black tourna-
ment on Friday.
Fifteen teams from Perth, Oxford,
Elgin, Dufferin, Wellington and
Waterloo counties gathered at
SHDHS for the annual tournament
In pool play, the Panthers easily
defeated four other teams withbut
allowing one goal. Jenny Wareham
and Tonya Richt combined for the
shutout.
Goals by this year's captains,
Marcie Ellison and Leanne Dietrich,
supplied the Panthers with their
first win over Stratford Central.

EXETER - On Sunday, September 17, the Exeter
Centennial senior soccer team played at home to St.
Thomas in the second division' of the Western Ontario
Soccer League.
The visiting team failed to field a full squad, but
we're able to hold back a lacklustre attack by the home
wain in the first half: Forward George McEwen with
excellent effort, started to work the attack and headed in
a perfect cross from left winger Jerry Van De Walle
into the opponent's net to put Exeter on the score-
board.
McEwen then took over as Exeter's goalie after
Craig Winbow was injured during a collision while
staking a great save.
The St. Thomas squad, after having been awarded
with a direct free kick outside of Exeter's 18 yard line
were able to tic the game at one apiece. The teams
were deadlocked 1-1 at the half time whistle.
Play again started slow in the second half until Jerry
Van De Walle put Exeter in the lead by scoring on a
scramble in front of the net.
Joe Martens, whose absence from the local team was
missed in the first half of the season, scored after posi-
tioning himself perfectly in front of the net.
The last:tally for Exeter came with approximately 10
minutes left in game time. Dick Lord was able to race
down a loose ball at the visitors 18 yard line,- fake
around the defending goalie and direct the ball calrhly
into an open net.
• The game finished with a 4-1 win for Exeter.
A good effort was shown by mid -fielder Ray Lewis,
John Flanagan and forward Joe Kaak.
Next action for the Centennials will be when they
travel to Wallacctown on September 24 to play their
last away game. The following week, October 1, Exet-
er plays host to Chatham Express at 2 p.m. for their
last scheduled game.
to give SH a 1-09 victory. •
Against Southwood, the girls
took another easy 4-0 win. Becci
Farquhar, Tina Campbell, Sue
Anne Soldan and Ellison were goal
scorers.
St. John's-Kilarnock proved to be
no competition for the overpower-
ing Panther team as SH took a 5-0
victory to come out on top of pool
play.
In semi-final play, the Panthers
met the champions of pool one,
Strathroy. Following a scoreless
30 minute game, two 10 minute
overtime periods were held.
Jeannette Kaak came through for
the Panthers during overtime put-
ting one in the net, but with only
30 seconds left to play, a Strathroy
player came back making it a 1-1
clash.
In penalty strokes, Cindy Moore
managed SH's only goal while
Strathroy put two past SH to take
the 3-2 victory.
Saturday, the Panthers rebounded
from their defeat to take the Kitch-
ener Schoolgirl's tournament.
In pool play, SH dominated with
two wins and one tie.
Tonya Riehl played superbly in
net to aid in a 0-0 tie against Fast -
wood Collegiate in the first game
of the day.
The girls proceeded to crush Galt
Collegiate Institute 4-0 with
Campbell leading the scoring with
two goals and Dietrich and Farqu-
har adding one each.
In game three, a win was neces-
sary to advance to the final game.
Ellison scored the Panthers single
and winning goal against Bluevale.
After seeing last years all -
Ontario champions, Forest
Heights, eliminated from the tour-
nament, SH met Grand River of
Kitchener. Straight from the open-
ing push back of an extremely
competitive game, the Panthers
rushed into the opponent's circle
and Farquhar blasted the ball into
the corner of the net.
The play during the rest of the
game went end to end but SH
maintained their slight lead to win
the championship.
Coach, Jim Workman, feels his
team, "made another strong start to
the season andshould be champi-
onship on tenders."
As of press time the girls were
travelling to Stratford to open
league play in a double header
against Stratford Central and Strat-
ford Northwestern. Tomorrow, the
team meets Mitchell and on the
weekend they travel to Scarbo-
'rough. .
