EXETER - In, their first game of
a best of three series for the league
champ' ship, the Exeter Express
came urshort by a score of 4-3
against the Lakeside team.
The visiting team jumped onto
the scoreboard in the first inning
pounding in one run.
In Exeter's first at bat, Doug
Schade and Rob Dickey reached
base on walks with one out but
couldn't capitalize on the situation
because of a double play off Kevin
Hem's bat to Lakeside's shortstop.
Lakeside widened the lead in the
second inning with another run to
lead the game 2-0.
The local squad were unable to
score any runs until the sixth inning
when Greg Hem got on board with
a single and was able to cross the
plate to bring the game easily in
reach with a2-1 score.
Lakeside were stagnant until the
eighth inning when they rallied for
two runs.
The Express replied with two
runs of their own off the bats of
Barry Baynham with a single; Grcg
Hem with a single and Rob Dickey
Lakeside and Exeter are playing a
league championship.

will see Exeter travelling to Winda-
mere Park in London on Friday
night with hopes of deadlocking the

Senior girls lose
season opener

LONDON - On the weekend,
South Huron District High
School's, senior girls' basketball
team participated in Saunders Sec-
ondary School's annual, invitational
basketball tournament. Unfortunate-
ly, the Panthers took two loses, ac-
cepting them as practice for upcom-
ing league play.
Friday night, the girls met Forest
Heights of Kitchener and were de-
feated 38-24. Despite some excel-
lent defence, Kitchener took a slight
18-12 lead after the first half of play
and continued to out score the lo-
cals to take the win.
Julie Merner led the scoring for
the Panthers with seven points
while Spring Cushman, Christine
Rose and Liz Mol each added four.
Saturday brought SH up against
the hosts of the tournament, Saun-
ders.
The Sabres doubled the Panthers
by half time, leading 22-11. SH
worked hard, playing quite well but
couldn't catch their opponents, fall-
ing 37-26.
Cagers start off right
EXETER - South Huron Dis-
trict High School's junior girls'
basketball tearq defeated Clinton
in their season opener exhibition
game last week and also partici-
pated in the Mitchell District
High School tournament on the
weekend.
Against Clinton, the Panthers
had little difficulty taking a con-
vincing 18-6 lead over the Red -
men in the first half of play.
The team continued to play well
and took a 41-17 victory.
• Anne Walper led the scoringfor
the Panthers with seven points
followed by Stacey Rader with
six.
Coach, Dennis Nielsen said his
team played an extremely intense
game, even though they had only
been together for two days.
On the weekend, the Panthers
made it through the first round of
the tournament by overcoming
St. Marys by a slight 20-18
count.
Becky Morgan dominated SH's
offense scoring 10 points. Stacey
Rader, Kerry Manders, Angela
Gould, Stacie Spicer and Sharon
DeBruyn each added two.
The girls had a little more diffi-
culty in the second round against
Seaforth, who took an 18-10 lead
in the first half of the game and
went on to defeat the Panthers 27-
16.
The girls meet Listowel today
for thcir league opener.

Royals advance
EXETER - The Exeter Royals ad-
vanced to the 'B' championship of
the South Perth Fastball League
playoffs last week by sweeping a
best of three series over the Mill-
bank Mustangs.
On Tuesday night at home, Dan
Heywood tossed a four hit com-
plete game shutout in a 3 to 0 Roy-
als' victory. Heywood faced only
31 batters in the nine inning contest
as he struck out eight, walked none
and hit one batter.
Royals opened the scoring in the
third inning when center fielder
Bob Cornish led off with a single
and was forced at second base as
Heywood reached on a fielder's
choice. Heywood later scored on a
two out single by first baseman
Derwyn Hodgins.
The local squad added two insu-
rance runs in the eighth as shortstop
Greg Wise led off with a single,
stole second and scored on a single
by Jim Allison who later scored on
a two out single by catcher Tony
Tordoff. Cornish and Allison led
the offence with two sin - les each.
. Royals 5 - Millbank 4
On Friday night, the Royals jour-
neyed to Millbank and picked up a
5 to 4 victory for the series win.
Greg Wise picked up the win as he
went seven innings, allowing three
runs on eight hits. he struck out
eight and walked a batter.
Hodgins pitched the final two in-
nings for the save as he struck out
five of the six batters he faced
while allowing an unearned run.
Left fielder Brent Dawson led the
offence with two singles, a triple
and a run scored. Dan Heywood
singled twice, drove in a run and
scored a run. Greg Wise singled
and drove in a run while Al Pym
singled and scored.
Jim Lewis who was pressed into
action as the catcher in the absence
of Tom Tordoff, played a sound
game and contributed a single and
R.B.I.
Exeter will now meet Sebring-
ville or Milverton in a best of five
final series which will start later
this week or early next week.
