Football on
By Michelle Ellison
EXETER - Lack of coaching
seems to be the main reason three
football teams have recently disap-
peared form the Huron -Perth Foot-
ball Conference.
But South Huron District High
school's Junior and senior coaches
are prepared to remain with their
teams until the league is forced to
fold.
"I think it's a great sport and a
good opportunity for young men to
get rid of frustrations", is the reason
senior coach, Rob Bogart, says he
sticks with his team.
However, since last year's season,.
the senior division of the HP con-
ference has lost two teams. Strat-
ford Central Schgpl was forced to
leave because of lack of coaching,
while Norwell High School were

the decline in Huron -Perth
pressured to return to Wellington
County, leaving only Goderich,
Listowel and SH for this season.
Bogart says his team is still deter-
mined to work hard and as far as
wanting to become conference
champs for the fourth year in a row,
he said, "I certainly do, but that's
up to the guys on the field."
The senior team is beginning
with a much smaller squad than in
previous years. Bogart thinks the
athletes feel they must concentrate
on studies in school and they have
job commitments. He doesn't
think it's because of lack of inter-
est
due to the small number of
teams in the league, because the
team will be competing in -the
same number of games as previous
years.
Junior coach, Dave Cox, is just
as determined to lead his team
through another season even
though the junior league lost Strat-
ford Northwestern, also due to lack
of coaching.
"We're inexperienced and young
but we have talent. If we can learn
to play well together, we could be
quite successful".
Bogart feels it would be very un-
fortunate for the athletes if the
league where to fold, seeing as
high school is the only opportuni-
ty the majority of students get to
compete in football.
Bogart also pointed out that as
football draws to it, the greatest
number of athletes for a team sport
at SH; many would be disappoint-
ed if the sport was eliminated and
the school spirit could be dam-
pened.
He added his own personal feel-
ing is "Football is the leader of
school spirit. If we have a pep ral-
ly, the rowdiness and roughness of
the whole thing (football) gets
people going. Perhaps it goes back
the the gladiators".
If in the future, another team
drops out causing the HP league to
fold, SH's options are limited.
Both teams have been competi-
tive in exhibition games against
teams of the London Conference in
the past and according to Cox, "the
London convener has said we could
play in the London system."
A sport similar to football, rug-
by, has been taken on by some
schools in the HP Conference but
since it is played in the spring, it
would not be an alternative for
football, simply an addition to the
conference.
It appears unlikely this sport
will appear around SH in the near
future as Bogart nor Cox are inter-
ested in coaching a rugby team.
But for now, thanks to loyal
coaching and hard working ath-
letes, the remaining teams of the
HP Conference should be as pre-
pared as ever to feel "The Cats
Scratch".

Marys scored two unearned runs in

dra Burns and Elaine Gould, who
both went two -for -three at the plate,
with a couple of runs batted in, and
Cyndi Down, who belted a run -
scoring triple. -
Patti Down's fine pitching perfor-
mance was backed by good defence
by the Greys except for the miscue
by her in the first inning, which led
to the St. Marys runs.

Anticipation - Pat Down, of the Downtown Dollies Ladies Slow -

playing second base in the Ladies Slow Pitch League "A" finals
Saturday. However, the rains came and washed the'game away
with the Dollies leading and the game was to be completed last
