Harmony Kings
giving Mitchell
performance
MITCHELL - A common saying
amongst a group of local male mu-
sic lovers, is that "the excitement
of barbershop singing is the world's
best kept secret". Ttlose same
chordsters also think that the second
best kept secret is that they have
and support, a registered charity
known as ,the "Harmonize for
Speech Fund".
Never heard of it you say? Then
perhaps you should consider being a
part of the crowd that will gather
with the Seaforth Harmony Kings
in the Mitchell and District High
School on Saturday evening, Sep-
tember 30. You'll likely come away
understanding that barbershoppers
put their hearts and voices into har-
mony not only for the benefit and
enjoyment of their audience and
themselves, but as a way to provide
continuing support for the many
children who are born with speech
impediments.
The Seaforth Harmony Kings are
one of 28 Ontario Chapters of "The
Society for the Preservation and En-
couragement of Barbershop'Quartet
Singing in America' and are about
to stage a dual-purpose effort that
will provide enjoyment for two spe-
cial groups of people. -
The first beneficiaries will be
these generous people who purchase
tickets and form the audience on
September 30 to have Ontario's top
barbershop chorus and quartets take
them to the "four-part highs" of a
lifetime! The second and most im-
portant group will share the longest
lasting benefits from the show,
namely the many children. with
speech difficulties who will receive
help through the proceeds from the
show!
Entitled "Barbershop Best", this
production is the Harmony King's
first all-out fundraiser and a must
for lovers of this unaccompanied,
chord -bending style of music. Stars
of the show will surely be the
"Scarborough Dukes of Harmony",
a 98 man, twice International
Champion Chorus, that can re-
establish one's definition of the
word "power". And for those con-
noisseurs of simple, pure, four-part
harmony, no less than four of Onta-
rio's top quartets will perform,
including the smooth "Mills Broth-
ers Sound" of "General Delivery".
Audience participants should beware
of "Hum Along Disease", it could •
be catching!
If you've ever seen a piece of the
Barbershop Society literature you
will likely notice the logo printed
there: "We Sing... that they shall
speak". Spend ten dollars and learn
more about the second best kept se-
cret. It might be fun!
