Tingle started working for the vil- lage August 8 as clerk.for a six- month probationary period. He knows Grand Bend is facing some complex issues which could make his job more difficult if he is hired permanently. Tingle has had nine years of ex- perience with municipalities else- where in Ontario. He toiled for three years for the Township of Tay, near Midland and after that Piior to getting the clerk's job in Grand Bend, Tingle had done a little teaching at Fanshawe College in London. His, wife wanted to keep her teaching job in London, which is why he thought he should commute from his north London house to his job, until he passes his probation. He said he may think about moving after that. Tingle is aware the village has been having trouble keeping their clerk so far this year. Dianne Mol - lard resigned in March. Deputy clerk Christine Smith, who was named acting clerk, left her post Wayne was tax collector for the Township of London for the next six years. He also worked for the Ausable Bayfield Conservation for 18. months as financial co-ordinator. He felt he was "treasurer" without the title. While employed by the A.B.C.A. and the other municipalities he had filled in briefly doing clerk work, like keeping minutes at meetings when the regular clerk was on holi- days, and felt his history degree would be beneficial to him if he was to be hired as clerk in Grand Bend permanently, Tingle last month, and Tom Maier filled in from the time Smith Left until Tingle was hired. Secretary Barb Dalrymple also re- signed her position in April. Coun- - cil just decided to hire a replace- ment for her at the previous meeting.' "I think the biggest task we face here in the office is just getting caught up, since we have been' short one person forso long. I know I am not up on a lot of. things. We lost a lot of knowledge when those people walked out the door," said Tingle. "'Tingle attended his first council meeting August 21 and already has seen that the councillors do not al- ways get along with each other. He is also aware they have been disa- greeing for quite some time. "Council is an interesting beast. I would like to see things smooth out with council and staff working Agether for the sake of the better- ment of the village," said Tingle. Council has to set priorities for the future, as many important is- sues face them in the near future ac- cording to Tingle. ft is important also to keep communication lines open with the ratepayers. "There are a lot of things going on for a village this size. You are not going to make everybody happy. They have to set the sequence as to what they want done when and keeping communication open with the people of the village. "When I was hired here, I had done a little bit of investigating myself and talked to some people in town, but I really didn't know what kind of personalities I would be forced to deal with on council. The bickering is unfortunate but that's politics. But as far as the staff and council working together goes we can't af- ford to have anybody else walk out that door." Shipka by Annie Morel= SHIPKA - Anyone in the area who is interested in a non- denominational Bible study can at- tend the meetings beginning Sep- tember 12 in the Sauble Court Lounge at 9:30 a.m. The meetings are billed as a Bible Coffee Hour and all ladies are welcome to at- tend. News from GB churches By Roberta Walker GRAND BEND - The Catholic Women's League of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in -Grand Bend held their August meeting in the Alhambra Hall. The bake sales and quilt raffle, the .summer fund-raisers have earned the CWL about $2,500 for their charitable work. Treasurer Margrit Breuer reported all CWL cookbooks were -sold, and 30 more were ordered. Father Paul Beck reminded the la- dies of the need for confirmation gifts for seven or eight students to be confirmed later in November at Mount Carmel. Under new projects, the outside of the Church is to be painted, the parking lot needs upgrading, ad Fr. Beck has requested CWL funding to cover costs of new altar linen. Instead of the annual choir trip to the Huron Country Playhouse, Fa- ther Beck asked the CWL to fund a choir trip to a Workshop on church Liturgy, in London on September 30. President Walker raised the pos- sibility of several CWL councils in our area sponsoring a "Fun Night" for the Huron -Perth deanery, like the successful one held at Hesson last winter. It would include Exeter, Zurich, St. Joseph's and Mount Carmel, probably held at the Dash- wood Community Centre. Guest Speaker for the evening, Murray Watson, a Seminary Stu- dent at St. Peter's in London, de- scribed his experiences on trip to Mexico and Nicaragua. The people of Nicaragua are very grateful for Canada's support, in face of eco- nomic blockades and military sup- port of rebels by the U.S.A., which is having disastorous consequences on their poor country. The Evening Unit of the UCW will meet on September 11, at 8 p.m. at Irene Kennedy's home in Grand Cove Estates. The Convenenting Service for- mally beginning Colin Stover's ministry on the pastoral charge will be held Sunday, September 17 at 7:30 p.m., at the Grand Bend United Church.
