EXETER - Exeter's Dave Shaw
will be in a New York Ranger's
uniform for at least one more sea-
son.
The defenceman was supposed to
go to Flint earlier this month to
sign a new contract but didn't be-
cause the Rangers sent him a pro-
posed three-year contract in the
mail. Shaw has yet to sign the
three-year pact but said Monday he
will be in New York for at least an-
other season.
Flint will be the site of the Rang-
er's new farm team, which is why
Shaw was originally going to
Flint. The Rangers were unvailing
their plans for Hint at the time.,
Shaw's signing was also sup-
posed to coincide with the hiring of
new coach Roger Neilson and new
assistant general manager Gort.
Stellick. The Rangers had hires:
Neil Smith as general manager only
two weeks prior to hiring Neilson.
The Rangers spent the entire
summer without a coach or a G.M.
which had Shaw a Iiule concerned.
Former G:M. Phil Esposito fired
coach Michel Bergeron with only
two games left in the regular sea-
son. The Rangers proceeded to lose
every game under Esposito includ-
ing playoffs and Esposito was then
let go in early June.
Shaw didn't want to comment too
much on the new hirings because
he didn't know too much about any
of them, but offered what little in-
sight he had.
Shaw did have a little knowledge
of Neilson because oflhis former
stints around the N.H.L. and was
quick to point out the differences
between him and his former coach.
"I think they are total opposites
as far as their coaching styles go.
Bergeron was a real motivator, and
from what I have been told, Neilson
will tell you what you have to. do
and expect you to go out there and
perform well without being told,"
said Shaw.
Shaw also said Smith was a hard
worker and a "nice man". He how-
ever added Stellick did a good job in
Toronto last year under trying con-
ditions.
"For as .young as he is he did
quite a respectable job and I have
heard only good things about him. l
don't think he really got a fair deal
from Harold Ballard however," he
added
Shaw will be taking part in the
provincial Senior D baseball cham-
pionships in Campbellville with
the Exeter Express on the weekend,
before heading to the Rangers train-
ing camp, which will begin next
Friday, September 8.

Express prepare to defend
WALSINGHAM - The Exeter
Express played only one time last
week, an exhibition game in Wals-
ingham and won 9-2 to get them-
selves ready for the OBA provincial
Senior D tournament this weekend
in Campbellville, near Milton.
Exeter fell behind 2-1 after one
inning but got some good pitching
from starter Doug Schade and four
others and held Walsingham score-
less the rest of the way, while ex-
ploding for three more runs in the
fifth, two in the seventh and three
in the ninth to take the somewhat -
easy victory.
For Exeter in the fust, Schade led
off the game and reached safely on
an error, stole second base and
scored on a single by Kevin Hem.
That was all the Express could
manage until the fifth inning when
they tallied three times on four hits,
singles by Schade, Doug Fairbairn,
and Steve Neil and a double by
I-Icm.
Exeter put two more runs on the
board in the seventh. Schadc
walked, took second when Pete
Heeney was safe on a fielder's
choice. Fairbairn singled to load the
bases and two runners scored when
Hem followed with another single,
his third hit and fourth rbi of the
game.
Hern was happy with just four
rbi's however. He knocked in a pair
of runs in the ninth with a double,
after Hceney had doubled and Fair-
bairn singled. Earlier in the inning,
Heeney knocked in Schade for the
fourth time in the game, with his
double.
Following Schade to the hill for
Exeter were Neil, Paul Gilmour,
Paul Elston, and Dave Atthill
wrapped things up. Exeter pitching
combined for nine strikeouts and
gave up only eight hits.
Exeter will start the weekend
tournament with a pair of contests
Saturday in Campbellville with
hopes of defending their provincial
Senior D championship.
