Help!
I have sunk to new lows. I am in desperate need of help with my
golf game.
I thought when I first joined the Ironwood Men's League that be-
cause I played one a week my golf $ame might improve and in fact
for the first few weeks this year it did, but it has gotten much worse
since then.
An average score for me for the last number of years for nine holes
would be in the high 40's. Earlier this year I had one of -my best
scores ever when I shot 40. But my, how fast things change.
I am almost embarrassed to admit this but in the last few weeks
my score has been in the high 50's. In fact the league executive sur-
prised me a few weeks ago and gave out prizes for high gross and
high net instead of the other way around.
I honestly don't know what I am doing wrong, but it is definitely
something major.
Anybody that has golfed with me knows how frustrated I am get-
ting. It's getting to the point where nobody is going to want to golf
with me anymore because I have lost my temper so many times and
for which I would like to apologize right now. I have come close to
sending my clubs to the bottom of the irrigation pond several times,
and if things keep going the way they are, they might end up there
yet.
Short of giving up the game completely or taking professional les-
sons I have done just about all I can to try and figure out what I am.
doing wrong to get me out of my misery.
I have seen just about every golf video on the market designed to
make better golfers, but none have seemed to work. I think I could
make a video myself, on what not to do while golfing.
I have read articles designed to make my swing a "classic". Of
course that didn't work, but I have also listened to tips from pros
during.golf telecasts and even Jack Nicklaus' daily golf tips in the
Toronto Star Sports section, all to no avail. Friendly suggestions on
what I have been doing wrong from some of the better golfers I have
been partnered with during league night also hasn't helped.
Each time 1 start a new round I am full of optimism that this
should be the time where I finally break out of my slump and play
well. But by about the third hole those hopes are shot.
As you might suspect I have never been a good golfer but have
been known to have an occasional respectable round or two -but
things are totally getting out of hand.
My biggest problem is myself for taking the game too seriously
but it gets very aggravating and somewhat embarrassing hacking
my way to 10's and 11's on some holes each week. But believe it or
not I still look forward to making my way around the links each
time.
Whatever happened to the saying practice makes perfect. It obvi-
ously doesn't apply to me forsome reason.
I think it may be too late to help my game much for the rest of
this golf year so I may be forced to take some lessons at the start of
next season. If I took them now I am sure I would forget what I
learned over the winter.
If any adventurous, daring souls out there would like play a round
with me to make any suggestions on how to improve my game,
please give me a call. I would be ever so grateful.
(No wisecracks now)
