by Listowel
EXETER - The season has come
to an abrupt end for the Exeter Jun-
ior Co-ops.
After taking first place overall by
a wide margin during the regular
WOBA South Division season, the
Co-ops have been swept three
games to none in a best -of -five
OBA series by Listowel. The locals
lost the third -and -final game of the
season 8-5 in Exeter last Tuesday
night. -
This will likely be the last action
of the season for the Juniors but
Listowel will go on to represent the
league at the OBA championship
tournament in Hamilton Labor Day
weekend
Exeter was dealt a bad break early
in the contest when centre fielder
Fred Gregus had to leave the game
in the first inning after injuring his
hand in the warm-ups diving for a
fly ball.
Exeter fell behind 2-0 after one
inning and 8-4 after the fifth but
could only manage another run in
the sixth to try and get a little clos-
er.
The locals scored a pair of runs in
the third inning when pitcher Todd
Laporte reached base safely on an
error, went to second when Brent
O'Brien singled and both runners
scored when Jeff Butler doubled.
Butler was left stranded at second
base however.
They picked up another pair of
runs in the fourth inning and tried
for more but had a runner thrown
out at the plate trying to score.
Dave Schwindt and Marty Merner
both reached base safely with get-
ting a hit and both ended up scoring
later that inning.
The Coop's final run came in the
sixth. With two out Merner was
safe on an error, stole second and
scored. when .Laporte singled. La-
porte helped his own cause with
three runs batted in.
Exeter had only six hits in the
game, two each by Laporte and
Scot Davidson, whad replaced
Gregus in centre field and one hit
by O'Brien and Butler.
In seven innings of work on the
mound, Laporte struck out four bat-
ters but walked seven. Half of Lis -
towel's runs were unearned because
Exeter chipped in with four errors
in the game.
The Co-ops will be losing Marty
Memer and Jim Lewis because they
will be too old for next season.
Times -Advocate, August 30, 1989
Bearing down - With home plate in site, Marty Memer of the Exet-
er Junior Co-ops, goes all out to try and score and finally did as
the Listowel catcher gets read • for a throw during last Tuesday's
playoff game in Exeter. Merner scored here but the Co-ops could
only manage four other tallies and lost 8-5 and were eliminated
from further action.
