Bantam tournament successful for local teams
EXETER - The Exeter Bantam
A's baseball team played host to the
WOBA League championship se-
ries, along with Dashwood, on the
weekend and the hosts were able to
make it as far as the semi-finals.
The tournament pitted the top
four teams from the north and south
divisions from the WOBA against
each other to determine a champion
to represent the league at the pro-
vincial finals. Despite going home
Saturday because of a mix-up in the
scheduling of the tournament,
Flesherton made it back Sunday
morning and becante champs, de-
feating another north division team,
Listowel, in the final.
Walkerton, Flesherton, Owen
Sound and Listowel represented the
north and Exeter, Lucan, Dashwood
and Goderich took part from the
south.
In their first game Exeter beat
Walkerton 10-8. but dropped their
second contest of the double -
knockout tournament to Listowel
• 11-3.
The hosts then took on a short-
staffed Lucan squad in their third
game and beat them 11-9, which ad-
- vanced Exeter to the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals Sunday after-
noon, Exeter played Listowel again
and fell for the second time, 12-8,
putting an end to their tournament
hopes.
The Lucan squad was missing
several players that helped them
achieve first -place during the regular
season, who all had other commit-
ments, and were still able to win
their first game Friday night, 11-1
over Owen Sound.
They however dropped their next
two games straight, 15-5 to Flesh-
erton and 11-9 to Exeter and were
eliminated.
Special mention goes out "to Mi-
nor Tyke Kevin Boshart who played
against some much older competi-
tion in Exeter. He played so Lucan
could field a team and would - not
have to forfeit. Boshart walked
twice and scored one run against
Exeter.
Any Dashwood tournament hopes
were dashed early when they lost
two -straight contests. They lost 11-
4 to Listowel and 15-1 to Walker-
ton.
Leading hitters for Exeter in the
tournament were; Ryan Lindenfield,
who had seven hits in 13 plate ap-
pearances and Fred Steciuk who
went seven for 14. Steve Farquahar
also batted .500 over the four
games, going six for 12.
Dashwood's top hitters were, Dan
Masse, Derck Masse, and Matt
Hartman, who -belted a home run,
while Ramer had two hits in the
second game foi- Dashwood. •
Against the big guys - Kevin Boshart, who is only Minor Tyke age,
played for Lucan in the WOBA Bantam Tournament in Exeter on
the weekend. He was forced to play because Lucan was missing
several key 'players. Boshart performed well and even scored a
run against Exeter.
Dusty slide - Mark Glavin of the Exeter Bantam A's slides at er's 11-9 win Saturday afternoon. The teams were taking part in
home plate under a cloud of dust after a wild pitch as Lucan the WOBA Bantam Tournament in Exeter on the weekend.

Exeter opened the series at home
but lost 5-2, thanks to the nine -
strikeout performance thrown by
St. Paul's Bonnie Reihl. She gave
up only three hits in the entire con-
test., two of which belonged to
Carla Wolfkamp.
The losing pitcher for Exeter was
Patti )own.
The Greys bounced back in their
next contest backed by fine defence
and good pitching from Tess Ncth-
ery, and staved off elimination by
winning 8-2.
Exeter was helped along by first -
inning homers by Sandi Fremlin
and Gail Beurerman. They picked
■
up three more tallies in the second
inning thanks to hits by Heidi Elli-
ot, Sandra Bums and Kendra Arthur.
Exeter came back the next night
to take the series by scoring six
