Stories, crafts, games
at Exeter United Church
EXETER - "Celebrate! Celebrate
God's love! Celebrate! Shout and
sing!" There was lots of shouting
and singing last week at Exeter
United Church as 93 children aged
four to 11 enjoyed ,stories, crafts
and games at Vacation Bible
School, under the theme of "Cele-
brate God's Love".
Coordinator Ruth Mercer designed
the curriculum so that the children
moved smoothly from one activity
centre to another with the assistance
of group leaders Debbie Harvey,
Terri Kerr, and Rebecca Darling.
Midmorning, the children and su-
pervisors enjoyed cookies and lemo-
nade, provided an served by the la-
dies of the U.C.W. A delightful
banner displaying the theme, com-
plete with balloons and strings, was
handscwn by the grades 3,4, and 5
students. This will be unveiled in
the church sanctuary for the special
service on September 10.
Special thanks go to the activity
leaders: Elly VanBergen, Linda Ait-
kins, Bea Crowe, Del Harvey, Jen-
ny Crowe, Angie Crowe, Faye
Kinsman, Dianne Shapton, Chrissy
Morgan, Amy Hawley, .Juanita
Chappell, Ben VanBergen, Wayne
Robinson and Bev Prout.
The lssons, games and songs can
be_summed up in these words to re-
member: "Put on love every day -
never hide your love away!"
Thanks to Bev Robinson for min -
istering God's word to the congrega-
tion during the past three weeks.
Rev. Hawley returns from holidays
on Tuesday.
Past and present choir members
are invited to a potluck funch this
Sunday, September 3 at the home
of Barb Sharpe (at the church in the
event of rain), in honor of the re-
tirement of our organist and choir
director, Robert Cameron. Also,
keep in mind September 17, as the
congregation shares in congratula-
tions for Robert during a special
service in his honor.
Do you have September 10
marked on your calendar? That day
offers something for everyone at
Exeter United! Join us at 11 a.m.
for the dedication service in honor
of the completion of our renovation
projects including the elevating de-
vice, ramps, men's washroom, and
heating system. Stay for lunch and
tour our new facilities. Then take to
the greens for the 1st Open Exeter
United Church golf tournament at
Exeter Golf Course at 2:30 p.m.
(child care provided at the church -
please let us know in advance!).
Relax later with your family at a
potluck supper at 6:00 -p.m. at the
church and be entertained in the ear-
ly evening by our talented fellow
church members. A funfilled day is
planned - be sure to take in at least
a portion of it!

-Foodprices up 4.1%
from July last year
OTTAWA - Food prices,, as
measured by the Consumer Price
index, rose 0.9 percet in July, ac-
cording to Agriculture Canada
economists. Compared to July
1988, food prices were 4.1 percent
higher.
The largest price increases were
4.6 percent for sugar and 3.5 per-
cent for cured meat. The increase in
sugar prices is partly due to fewer
retail promotions and an increase
in world raw sugar prices. The
higher prices for cured meat reflect
increases in the prices paid to hog
producers.
The largest price decrease was
1.3 percent for fresh vegetables.
This decrease is seasonal, but is
smaller than usual due to cool, wet
weather early in the growing sea-
son in Central Canada, followed by
hot•dry weather. This weather pat-
tern slowed the maturation of

This month, prices for fresh veg-
etables should fall signficantly as
supplies of salad vegetables in-
crease. Potato and other storable
vegetable prices should also de-
crease as harvesting begins. Apple
prices will also fall as early varie-
ties are harvested, and prices for
peaches, pears, melons and other
summer fruits will decrease with
the harvest.
Prices for beef and pork are ex-
pected to show little changes as
prices paid to cattle and hog pro-
ducers stabilized between July and
August. Chicken prices will also
remain relatively stable.
