Express dispose of Seaforth and Port Lambton
EXETER - The Exeter Express
Senior D baseball team had a bust
week, completing a pair of sweeps
in best -c f -three playoff series to
start the 1989 OBA Playdowns, dis-
posing of Seaforth and Port Lamb -
ton. .
Last Tuesday the Express opened
the Seaforth series in Exeter with a
24-3 pounding of the visitors and
didn't let up in the deciding game
Thursday in Seaforth, winning 17-
2.
The Express took care of the
opening game of the next series,
winning 10-9 in Port Lambton Sat-
urday and followed that up with a
19-10 thrashing in Exeter Sunday.
Exeter had things going their own
wav in last Tuesday's game, scoring
four times in the first and second
innings, seven in the third, six in
the fourth and added another three in
the fifth. Seaforth picked up all
three of their runs in the iniljal
stanza.
Exeter':: scoring in the fourth in-
ning was highlighted by Barry
Baynham's 300 foot blast over the
right -field fence with the bases load-
ed
Every Exeter player but three
scored at least one run in the con-
test as well. In fact, Kevin Hern
scored five times, Dave Shaw four
times, Dave Hayter, Rob Dickey,
Baynham, Doug Fairburn, and Greg
Hern each scored twice, and Dave
Parsons, Darcy Martin, Kevin
Drager, Brian Mercer, and Brian
Horner each scored once.
The Express tallied 24 times on
just 14 hits and were helped out by
as many walks.
Steve Pearce went the distance on
the hill fur Exeter and gave up only
One hit after Seaforth scored three
times in the first inning, striking
out a tote i of five in six innings of
work.

This game, Seaforth managed to
keep Exeter under 20 runs but could
only steer a pairof runs their way,
one in the second and one in the
sixth.
Exeter scored four times in the
second innings, and batted around
the order twice in the third inning
scoring 13 times on 11 hits and
Co-ops drop two straight

Co-ops have their backs to the wall
in the Ontario Baseball Association
playdowns after failing to field an
entire team in their opening game
of a best -of -five series against Lis-
towel and giving up 10 unearned
runs in Sunday's 12-5 loss in Exet-
er.
The Co-ops only had eight
players for the first game of the
series in Listowel Thursday night
and had to forfeit thr series opener
and gave up 12. runs Sunday to fall
behind two games to none in the
best -of -five series. The Co-ops
blamed Thursday night's game on a
lack of communication.

the season for the London Tigers, which they won 8-6.
Sunday afternoon in Exeter, the
Co-ops fell behind 7-1 after five in •

nings and things didn't get much
better for the locals, as Listowel
scored three more unearned runs in
the eighth inning and two in the
ninth.
Meanwhile the Co-ops managed
to get three back in their half of the
sixth and one more in the ninth.
Jeff Butler and Dave Schwindt
each went three for five in the
game, but Butler also doubled and
scored a run. Ross Keller had two
hits in four plate appearances and
also scored one time, while single
hits went to Brent O'Brien, Scot
Russell, Scot Davidson, and Fred
Gregus.

Lawn bowlers
win medals -
BRAMPTON - Five of Exeter's
junior bowlers travelled to Bramp-
ton last Sunday for the all -Ontario
finals. The youngsters represented
zone C of Ontario and returned
home with a gold and bronze medal
for their efforts.
The girls' triples team of skip
Jacklyn Wright, vice skip Andrea
Weigand and lead Anita Wein took
the gold medal in their category af-
ter defeating Dunville 16 - 11. The
win gave the girls the gold medal as
Dunville and themselves were the
only two teams in this category.
Shawn and Allan McFalls
claimed the bronze medal in boys'
pairs. The boys were defeated by the
eventual tournament champs,
Oshawa 13 - 11 and 20 to 14.
However, the team took an easy 24
- 6 win over Dunville to give them
the bronze.

Pete Heeney led the way in this
contest with three hits in five plate
appearances and scored three times.
Martin also had three hits in four
trips and scored three times, Bayn-
ham had rWO hits including a dou-
ble, and ! , ored twice, Doug Schadc
had two hits in four trips and Dick-
ey, Steve Merner, Dave Shaw,
Pearce, Drager, Greg Hern and Walt
Parkinson chipped in one hit
apiece.
Dave Atthill worked into the fifth
inning on the mound for Exeter and
got some relief help from Paul Els-
ton to complete the rout.
After blasting Seaforth in straight
games, Exeter was surprised last
week when they learned they would
have to play Port -Lambton, but
took care of them rather easily as
well.

take ihe opening game of the series
Satwday in Port Lambton 10-9,
scoring four times in the eighth'in-
ning to erase a 6-4 deficit after six
inn ings.
Hayter led the way in this contest
with three hits and one run scored,
Brian Mercer scored twice on apair
of singles, while Dickey tripled and
scored in the seventh inning and
Greg Hern had a pair of hits and
scored a run. The other Exeter run
came on a home run by Heeney in
the seventh.
Gilmour started on the hill, and
went the first three innings and was
followed by Elston and Shaw who
pitched the last two-thirds of an in-
ning to record the save.
Exeter 19 -Port Lambton 10
Exeter scored five tallies in the
second, two in the third, live in the
fourth, one in the fifth and one
more in the sixth inning to com-
plete the rout before the mercy rule
was imposed marking the end of
Port Lambton's season.
Exeter batters battered Pon Lamb -
ton pitching for 22 hits in the con-
test, including five by Fairburn, a
home run by Gilmour, three hits by
Shaw two singles by Baynham and
a pair by Dickey.
Drager went the complete seven
innings to pick up the win on the
hill for Exeter in the series finale.
The Express now qualify for the
provincial tournament which is to
be held in Campbellville Labor Day
weekend in hopes of defending their
provincial Senior D championship.
They will be playing Wyoming at
a yet -to -be determined site some-
time this week.

pitch by a Seaforth pitcher during the opening game of the playoffs for the Express last Tuesday in
Exeter. The locals won this game rather eas'ly 24-3.
