Ironwood Ladies Club Sports Spotlight - s P by Wayne Proctor _ '9'0.1 4 Sunday will be the last opportunity for people in the area to watch the Eastern League London Tigers in action at Labatt Park this sea- son. , And what better opportunity to watch than with Exeter Day at the old ball park. The Tigers have set aside 500 tickets for the game for Exeter Day and can be obtained locally from Dolly Creces at the Exeter BIA of- fice. Call 235-2919 or drop in at 322 Main Si, the old town hall. That game just happens to be the last home game of the Tigers for the 1989 season, they finish he season on the road, and is also Fan Appreciation at the park, with a opportunity for all fans attend- ing to get extra prizes in additiu t to watching a great professional baseball game. Tickets for the game have been selling slowly through the BIA which means there arc plenty left for the game. So if you have been putting off going to watch a game, this is a perfect opportunity to get a game in this year. Exeter will receive scoreboard recognition for the game, Mayor Bruce Shaw, or someone from council, will be throwing out the first pitch and the Jug Band will be performing throughout the park. The Tigers are in their initial season in London and are currently in a three -team battle for the last playoff spot. They currently are only two games out of post -season contention with the final two weeks to be played on the road. Providing the opposition in the game for the Tigers will be the Reading Phillies, a Philadelphia Phillies farm club. If Exeter Day does not go over well, with lots of local fans filling the ball park, I seriously doubt whether there will be another Exel: Day next season, so let's see you all at Labatt Park Sunday aftc: - noon. Game time is 1 p.m. Tickets .ell for $6.50 for box seats, $5.59 for chair seats, $4 for general admission and $3 for children under 12, senior citizens general admission. * * * Congratulations to the Exeter Royals for a fine showing in their annual tournament this year and :eating their fans to some exciting fastball. The Royals played in their tot: rnament for the first time ever this year in order to create some interest locally. They accomplished that, the games that they were in were very well attended, but they will probably think twice about playing next year after playing five times and almost six on Sunday. Due to a 3-2 loss to the St. Pauls Generals, the Royals were forced to play five times Sunday. And if they hadn't lost to Strath- roy 2-1 in 14 innings, in the semi-final game, they would have had to play for a sixth time Sunday because Strathroy didn't lose during the entire tournament. And unbelievably, Derwyn Hodgins pitched in seven es for the Royals on the weekend, including the five games Sunday. The Royals had trouble scoring runs for him throughout the tourney and he pulled himself after 10 innings in the loss to Strathroy with the score tied 1-1. - Strathroy had several good scoring chances in the previous in- nings, before finally pushing across the winning run in the 14th in- ning in a game that lasted well over three hours. If the Royals could have won they would have forced another game. As it was The final game was not finished until 11 p.in. Sunday. Good efforts guys. o * * * Well its almost that time of year again. The Exeter and Distr,. i Ringette Association will be holding early registration for the in- coming season starting tonight at the South Huron Rcc Centre fro..i 7-9 p.m. Registration fee for one play,.r for the season will be $100 and will drop for each additional merabcr of the family that plays. The second and final day for early registration will Monday night from 7-9 p.m., again at the SHI: C. . * * * This note goes out to all those teams and organizations planning on holding softball tournaments in the near future or even next sea- son; If you would like covcragc, or winning team pictures in the pa- per, please give us at the T A .about two or three days notice so we can plan for it.
