Royals come close
to taking title
EXETER - The Exeter Royals
had to win a lot of fans or at least
gain their respect as perhaps the
largest crowd to ever sec a fastball
game witnessed the finals of the.
eighth Annual Exeter Royals Fast -
ball Tournament.
Unfortunately for the home squad
exhaustion took it's toll and. they
came up short losing to the Strath-
roy Lands Jets 2-1 in 13 innings.
The action got underway Friday
evening as Exeter routed Robert
Bice Construction 9-2 behind the
one -hit pitching of Greg Wise. St.
Pauls knocked off Fullarton 3-0.
Sheddcn edged Shakespeare 1-0 and
the final contest of the night saw
Pctrolia get by Oakville 1-0.
Saturday's morning) Mark Daoust
turned in an outstanding perfor-
mance collecting three hits and
pitching a 6-5 win over Steve Virag
and the London Police. Stoney
Point edged Bclmore 3-1. Strathroy
5, Hurdcrson 3, and London Arby's
2, Burlington Abrex 1 in eight in-
nings.
The dark clouds that gathered in
the Saturday afternoon sky proved
to be a bit ironic as St. Pauls
scorcd two unearned runs to beat
Exeter 3-2 in extra innings. Fullar-
ton them eliminated Bice from fur-
ther play by a score of 7-2, before
the sky opened up.
When the weather finally cleared
up the tournament organizers were
left with two lakes instead of soft-
ball diamonds. However the team
and a few volunteers worked dili-
gently for hours until the diamonds
were playable.
• When play continued after ap-
proximately four hours, Pctrolia
came from behind to upsct Sheddcn
while Shakespeare downed Oakville
4-2.
Stratford played their second
straight extra inning game but came
up short losing to Stoney Point 1-
0.
Meanwhile on the losers side of
the bracket, the London Police beat
Bclmore by a 5-0 count.
In the final games of the second
round, Strathroy kept rolling along
led by former Memorial League
All-Star Brian Anderson winning 3-
1 over London Arby's. Burlington
Abrex meanwhile stayed alive as
their big right handcr Mark Curtis
two hit Henderson to win 2-0.
Due to the long rain delay the
new revamped schedule pitted Exet-
er against Shakespeare and Fullar-
ton against Shedden approximately
11:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Derwyn Hodgins showed fans
what near perfection in fastball
looked like. Throwing only the sec-
ond perfect game in tournament his-
tory, Hodgins struck out 18 of the
21 batters he faccd and the Royals
bats came to life collecting 10 hits -
for six runs off espeare pitch-
ing. At the me time, Shedden
topped Ful on 8-6 in a game that
ended aroun 2:15 a.m. Sunday
morning.
Starting one early Sunday morn-
ing still had the tournament running
about two hours late due to the pre-
vious day's rain.
The London Police had little diffi-
culty sending London Arby's home
with a 10-4 defeat. With only St.
Pauls, Peutblia, Stoney Point and
Strathroy left undefeated Petrolia
got by SL Pauls 2-0 and a scrappy
Stoney Point team put up a good
fight, but finally bowed 2-1 to
Strathroy.
Exeter continued its long climb
back through the loss bracket with
Hodgins playing a "one man wreck-
ing crew' tossing a one -hitter and
driving in the winning run to top
Shedden 2-1.
Both Jim Avery of Stratford and
Steve Virag of London held their
opposition to three hits as London
beat`Stratford.
Hodgins started his second con-
secutive game and Greg Wise
mopped up as Exeter advanced to
the money round by eliminating
Stoney Point 3-1.
Brian Noyes and Hodgins led the
way at the plate each reaching base
three time in four trips. Steve Virag
proved why he is still considered
one of the best pitchers in fastball
holding St. Pauls to two hits and
winning.1-0. _.
That set the stage for a pitching
confrontation between Derwyn H d
gins and Virag. Both pitchers Clad
carried their teams this far but again
Hodgins bat did as much damage as
his fastball. Hodgins knocked in
Pete Tuckey and Bob Cornish with
a double on route to a 5-1 victory.
Dan Heywood held the Police to
one run over the last four innings
for the save.
The Royals had to then face Pe-
trolia, who lost to Strathroy 3-0 in
the next game. The fatigued Exeter
squad were able to push a run across
in the 10th inning on back-to-back
singles by Noyes and Hodgins to
top Pctrolia 2-1.
By the time the final gamewas
set, Exeter knew it had to do to win
the tournament was beat Strathroy
twice in the final. The problem was
that the Royals' would start the
championship series by playing
their fifth consecutive game in the
sweltering Sunday afternoon heat.
Hodgins courageously started his
fifth game of the day and seventh in
two days.
The Royals showed a lot of cou-
rage and Hodgins' performance was
unbelievable throwing 10 innings
before he had to leave the game.

weekend, but lost two straight

Grand Bend was defeated iiy Us -

16-9. Grand Bend had beaten Us -
borne twice during the regular sea-
son, by 13-1 and 18-7 thrashings,
and Crediton hadn't lost a game un-
til they were defeated by Exeter in
the championship final.
The outstanding player in the
first game was Usbornc's pitcher
Dennis Gower, who struck out 12
Grand Bend batters and faced only
27 in the game.
Only Jake Morgan and Kyle Ver-
muellen were able to make contact
for Grand Bend, against Gower's
impressive pitching. Both players
laid down picture -perfect bunts that
should have been scored singles if
they hadn't been bobbled and a
throwing error. As a result, Gower

spite giving up six runs.
At the plate, Gower went two -
for -three with three runs batted in,
which were the only hits produced
in the game for either side.
It was a hard-fought close con-
test. Ryan Taylor, Jason Woodley
and Jeremy Wilde shared pitching
duties for Grand Bend and combined
for the two -hitter, losing only to
Gower's outstanding individual
pitching performance.
