Freeman recognized
with OHA gold stick
LUCAN - In recognition of his
40 years in hockey, Lucan's Jim
Freeman recently received the pre-
stigious gold stick award, the high-
est award given by the Ontario
Hockey Association.
Every year the O.H.A. bestows
one or two gold sticks awards to
people across the province they•feel
have contributed to hockey over a ,
number of years. Freeman is only
the second person in this area to
ever receive such an honor. The
other was Don Urbshott, of Ilder-
ton, who was honored for his hard
work with hockey 10 years ago.
Urbshott's son Wayne is a member
of the Ex "ger Mohawks.

Honored - Lucan's Jim Freeman was recently honored with a Gold
Stick Award from the Ontario Hockey Association in recognition of
his 40 years of hockey service in the Lucan area. Freeman is only
the second person from this area to win the O.H.A. most distin-
guished award:
award by Don Yeck, a convener in
Belmont, and learned he won the
award at a recent O.H.A. conven-
tion in Toronto. The award came as
quite a shock.
"I was really surprised when I
found out. When they were talking
about who had won it they said he
started coaching minor hockey in
Burgessville, which is where I am
from and then I looked around the
room and didn't see anybody else
from there and knew they were talk-
ing about me," said Freeman.
Freeman started coaching in Lu -
can in 1949. He launched the first
bantam hockey club ever in the vil-
lage. After moving to the Western
Ontario Athletic Association the
next yeas , he coached the Bantam
and Pee 'Wee hockey clubs as well
as player iin the Intermediate team.

for several seasons, something he
said he ieally enjoyed.
Freeman is also one of the found-
ers of the present Lucan Irish Junior
D hockcy club. He said the motiva-
tion in starting a Junior team in
Lucan was so that the local kids
could have a place to play Junior
close by because they were losing
too many, who were heading north
to play in Exeter.
Shortly after getting the Irish off
the ground, Freeman stepped down
from minor hockey to devote more
time to the Junior club. In past
years he has served as, president,
coach, mwiager and even bus driver.
Freeman is currently on the execu-
tive of th.3 club.
In all ft's years coaching, Free -1
man has 'Peen a part of two provin-
cial championship teams, the 1953-
54 Intermediates and the 1958-59
Midget.
Freeman, who is retired from On-
tario Hydro, spends most of his
summer months working on his
several gardens near his home in
Lucan, and his winters in the hock-
ey rink.
Freeman also got his wife in-
volved in hockey working for the
Irish executive and he wouldn't have
it any other way;
"It gives me something to do in
the winter. I love hockey and I will
probably be associated with it until
they don't want me anymore or un-
til the day I die".
