ZURICH - Scott Regier recently
got his "foot in the door" of Cana-
dian track and field when he placed
10th in the decathlon at the Canadi-
an Junior Track and Field meet in
Saskatoon.
The 18 -year old Zurich resident
has trained with the London West-
ern track and field club for two
years, travelling to London two to
three times a week to train for
about three hours each day. He was
one of five athletes from the club
to attend the national event.
In the past year, he has attended
six indoor meets and four outdoors.
He says he uses the indoor meets
in the winter to train for the out-
door meets.
The outdoor meet in Saskatoon
was held on July 8 and 9.
Day one for Regier included the
100 -metre and 400 -metre sprints,
long jump, shot put and high
jump. Day two brought the 110 -
metre hurdles, discus, javelin, pole
vault and 1500 -metre race.
Regier considers the decathlon an
"experience event" since athletes do
not reach their peak until the age of
25 or 26. Regier hopes t reach his
prime in 1991 or '92.
His coach felt he could have
waited a year before entering the
meet and Regier himself admits, "I
knew myself I wasn't ready but I
had to try one (a meet)."
Regier is now very pleased he
gave it a'shot. "I learned by being
there," he says. He explained the
other competitors were extremely
friendly and helpful to him, as a
first-time entrant.
Regier's five-year track coach at
South Huron District High School,
Joe Fulop, encouraged him. to try
the decathlon. "I couldn't take one
event and be the best so I had to go
to the all round," says Regier.
Since the decathlon involves 10
events, it is not necessary to be the
best in all events to come out on
top.
With the event scored under a
point system, Regier feels he lost
ground in such events as the pole
vault, discus and javelin and he
picked up points in the running
events.
With his three weakest events
one after the other, Regier did feel
somewhat discouraged at times, but
his philosophy of "never look back
and never look ahead" helped him
take one event at a timend not
think about what he "should have
done".
Not only involved with track at
South Huron, Regier also played
football and basketball.
He will attend Fanshawe College
in the fall and will remain with the
Western track club unless he can
get spmeone he knows from Kitch-
ener or Windsor to coach him per-
sonally.
He also hopes to receive a train-
ing schedule from the national track
and field coach to prepare him for
bigger and better things.
Regier feels the Saskatoon meet
was definitely beneficial. Along
with having the advantage of being
ranked nationally, he feels the meet
gave him extra training and experi-
ence that will aid him in his future
goals.
Track and field winner - Scott Regier, of Zurich, recently placed
tenth in the decathalon event of the Canadian Junior Track and
Field meet in Saskatoon. He is shown here beside his trophy case.
