Agronomy
expanding
CENTRALIA - The Agronomy
research program at Centralia is ex-
panding into a new area. The Onta-
rio Vegetable Growers' Marketing
Board is sponsoring a co-operative
sweet corn research trail between
Centralia and Ridegtown Colleges.
Bruce Brolley will co-ordinate the
trails at Centralia. Debbie Riley, a
research technician has been hired
specifically to assist Brolley with
the experiments.
Four separate sweet corn research
trials will be conducted this sum-
mer.
The objectives of the experi-
ments are to:
Plant two of the new sweet corn
cultivars at five seeding rates and
evaluate for plant stand, maturity,
tip cover, ease of snapping, yield
and quality.
Determine the effect of planting
date and maturity on the yield of
both the standard and new sweet
corn cultivars.
Evaluate Supersweet corn for
adaptability to southwest Ontario
conditions and for a variety of char-
acteristics including: maturity,
yield, kernel depth and width, cob
shape and ear uniformity.
Establish one standard and one
new sweet corn cultivar with simit
lar maturities at standard width and
plant population and evaluate for a
number of characteristics. •
The funding for the research is
currently limited to one year but
may be continued depending on the
results and the need for further in-
vestigation.

Get ready
for peaches
There are three types of peaches
grown in ontario:
1. Semi -freestone: These peaches
herald the start of the season in
mid-July. Their flesh is soft and
clings to the pit.
2. Freestone: As its name im-
plies, this peach separates easily
from its pit. Freestone peaches can
be found in stores and markets by
the second week of August with
Red Haven being the first available
of this type.
3. Clingstone: The flesh of these
peaches clings firmly to the pit.
They are used exclusively for com-
mercial processing.
Peach Warm -Ups: Spread slices
of pound cake with raspberry or
peach jam, sprinkle with sugar and
ground cinnamon and broil until
lightly browned. Top with fresh
Ontano Peach halves and sweetened
sour cream.
Peach Treats: Place vanilla wafers
in paper -lined muffin cups. Com-
bine softened cream cheese with
sugar and chopped Ontario Peaches
to taste, spoon over wafers and chill
until firm. Top each with a peach
slice.
The St. Boniface Knights of Co-
lumbus are planning their annual
pork barbecue and corn roast for
Sunday August 13 on the separate
school grounds. Tickeie will be
sold at the event for $5 for adults
and $2.50 for children. Childrens'
games will begin the afternoon at 2
p.m. Supper begins at 5 p.m.
Here's a reminder that Wintario
will be coming to Zurich on Au-
gust 24 at the Community Centre.
The event is sponsored by the Zu-
rich Lions, who are incidentally
holding their annual golf tourna-
ment at Bayview on August 12.
CWL members are reminded to
return their quilt tickets or money
to Audrey Smith or Helen Creces
before the Bean Festival Draw on
August 26.
The playground children are on
the lookout for materials useful for
crafts, such as wax paper, string,
foil, yarn, popsicle sticks etc. IF
anyone would like to contribute
any such articles they can bring
them to -the arena during the day.

We're glad you asked!
BOB FLETCHER WHY DO I NEED A
it's a common misconception that only older people or those with large
'amounts of property need wills. The truth is that every adult should
have a will to guarantee that his - or her - final wishes will be carried out
properly.
1f you die without a will, local law will determine who inherits your prop-
erty. Seldom will your property pass to the people you would choose in
the proportions you prefer. With a will, you can choose who will admin-
ister your estate, handle.financial matters, and act as guardian for your
children. Even people in their 20's should have a will to specify their
wishes in such matters.
So-called "do-it-yourself" wills often do not stand up in court. Consulta-
tion with a competent lawyer will assure that your will is legal and bind-
ing; his or her fee is small when you consider the peace of mind that a
legally secure will brings.
As funeral directors, we have seen the disastrous results when the
proper wills were not drawn.
As funeral directors, we can provide counseling if you choose to speci-
fy funeral services as part of your will. For all other related matters, see
a lawyer.
We welcome your questions and comments. hes2
