Mamas and Papas performance
adds nostalgia at Playhouse.
By Debbie Lord
GRAND BEND - "California
Dreamin" brought back memories
of the sixties and the Current edition
of the vocal group, The Mamas and
Papas onto the Huron Country
Playhouse stage, Sunday night.
The Mamas and Papas got their
start almost 22 years ago. The orig-
inal group
rifi-inal.group consisted of John Phil-
lips, his wife Michelle, Cass Elli-
ott and Denny Dougherty, who was
originally from Halifax:
The original, group only lasted
two years but had many hit records.
totheir credit which brought many
of the fans to see the current edition
-of the group.
After -15 years, the group re-
formed in 1982 with the new lineup
of Phillips; his daughter Macken-
zie, who is taking over for Michelle
• . Phillips vocals, Spanky McFarlane,
replaces Mama Cass who died in
1974 and Scott Mackenize who re-
places Dougherty
The reformed group sang the mu-
sic fromthe sixties to an enthu-
siastic•crowd giving flashbacks of.
bell bottom pants, frayed tops, -
flower children and thehippie gen-
eration.
The audience clapped along for
the hour -and -10 minute concert to
the group's. music ending with a
standing ovation which brought
the Mamas and Papas back .on
stage for a finale.
Audience reaction was mixed.
Some audience members found the
music great but the vocals not
quite loud enough while others.
found -the lighting, techniques
sometimes off balance.
Drew Robertson of Crediton,
said, "It was great! It's. scary
though, they are looking so much
older"
When asked if they were one of
his favourite groups in the sixties,
he replied, ."They were up there.
The Beatles were my favourite, but
they wouldn't come to Huron
County". -
