The first news was that Canada Post in 1988 took in more money than it spent for the first time'in some 30 years. The amount .was a whopping profit of $96 million: . . . . Here comes the not -so -good news. Can- ada Post is going to pay the federal gov-- ernment a large bunch of money and they are calling it a dividend to the.tune of $300 million. - This money, if it must be paid to some- one should go to the post office' and not to general funds as it has been indicated.. - What 'does this . all mean? It's simple. That must be their thinking in sending this chunk of money to the government. But, Canada Post says it is putting some -money 'back, into. improving services. How can that be when they give away this money on a mandate -to break even. ,That was the pitch made when the new super 'bo'xes were.'proposed for Exeter. When asked if it was a cost cutting meas- ure, the postal official said, "No, but; it. .will improve service." A number of Exeter sidents will argue with that point: One local subscri- ber of this: newspaper -has cancelled his subscription because he doesn't get the 'paper as early as when he picked his mail up at the post off -ice. - By Ross Haugh Serving Soeth Huron, North Middlesex & North Lambton Since 1873 Published by ).W. Letter to the Editor As a member of Usborne Town- ship cour?cil 1 was disappointed in the fads presented in Adrian Harte's article •on Recycling in the June 21st paper. First of all it was great to have our local paper doing an article on recycling, but i am taking this op- portunity to explain Usborne's deci- sion to initiate curb side blue box • pick up. Originally council had tended to- ward depot type recycling with a commercial firm. Upon further discussion, we diose to go with Blue Water Recy- cling a co-operative organization o municipalities in Lambton, Huron, and Middlesex because they took most plastic containers in contrast with most recycling /programs which only take clear pop bottle type plastic. We still 'had to choose between depot and curbside pick-up. Usbome residents use two landfill sites in Kirkton and Hcnsall and in addition a number of our residents purchase curbside garbage pick=up from a private firm. . 1 dents as pd'ssiblc. council opted to .go with'curbsidc pick-up for recy- clables. As far as cost we felt the cost wag very reasonable especially when we were faced with having to set up two depots which would haveto be staffed with part time help in order to ensure proper use. For these reasons. we felt that our choice was the most practical for re- cycling in Usbomc. - By Ross Haugh eggs. ' • ., . Aftcr'rcading about a London.
