tcherd tournament exceeds goal for new van
GRAND BEND - Kitchener's
Gary Cowan broke his own course
record of 61 by one last Wednesday
to help his team take first place in
the Eighth Annual Scatchcrd Invi-
tational Golf Tournament at Oak-
wood Inn. in Grand Bend, leading
.the field of 252.
Cowan shot.a blistering 10-undcr
par round and was helped to the
win by his foursomc, Joe Cun-
ningham, Herb Patterson, and Gary
Handley, all of Toronto. The four
combined for a total of 164 quota
points in the tournament's scoring

just one of the celebrity.golfers in the annual Dave Scatcherd In-
vitational Golf Tournament at Oakwood Inn in Giand Bend last
Wednesday. The charity event helped raise $25,000 towards the
purchase of a new van for transporting kids to the Scatcherd
Centre in London.
Express win
EXETER - The Exeter Express
played three league games last
week and won two of them.
The Express blanked Seaforth f3-
0 and Lakeside 2-0 but came up
short against Strathroy 4-3. They
also played Walsingham in an ex-
hibition game Sunday afternoon
'and lost 8-5.
Against Lakeside, Exeter scored
it's only two runs of the game in
the fourth inning.
Kevin Hem led off that inning
with a single, was sacrificed to sec-
ond by Rob Dickey, went to third
on a passed ball and scored on a
single by Walt Parkinson. Parkin-
son later scored when Darcy Hayter
was safe on an error.
The Express had only five hits in
the game, buLtwo Exeter pitchers
scauered six Lakeside hits.
Exeter 13 Seaforth 0
In this game the Express scored
once in the first, twice in the sec-
ond, three in the third and fourth
and finally added four more in the
si xth.
Darcy Martin led the Express at-
tack this game with four hits in
four trips including a home run,
double and pair of singles, and
scored three runs. Dave Shaw had
three singles in four trips and
scored three runs, while• Kevin
Drager had two hits in four trips,
including a homer and scored a pair
of runs. •
Exeter pitchers Paul Gilmour and
Paul Elston allowed only a pair of
Seaforth singles.
Wednesday in Strathroy, the
home team scored twice in the bot-
tom of the ninth to nip the Express
4-3.
Strathroy had scored once in the
first and once in the second before
getting the pair to win in the ninth.
Exeter answered with single runs in
the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Peter Heeney and Parkinson had
rbi singles for Exeter in the game..
Doug Schade and Dave Parsons
were the only Express players st'ith
more than one hit, both had two
singles.
Dave Slow started the mound for
the Express and was relieved by
Schade in the fifth, Dave Atthill in
the eighth and Kevin Drager in the
ninth.
The Express played against Sea -
forth in Exeter Tuesday night and
they will play in the Walkerton
Tournament in Walkerton on the
weekend. Next league action for the
Express is Tuesday July 4 when
Strathroy makes a return visit to
Exeter at 6:30 p.m.

ceived new sports jackets for their

, Not far behind in a tic for second
place with 156 points was the Lon-
don foursome of George Stinson,
Maurice Butchey, Walt Mciklejohn
and Blair Turner.
They were tied with another Lon-
don foursome of Alex Jazcy, Peter
Sherman, Ed Thonide and Kcn
Waite.
The big winner in the tourna-
ment was the children of the
Scatchcrd Centre in London. The
charity event met its goal of rais-
ing $25,000 to purchase another'`
van for transporting the children to
and from the centre:
The tournament attracts golfers
from all over and this year was no
different. Golfers came from Min-
nesota and Vancouver end Montreal
to take part this year.
The special guests this year in-
cluded former I\TI U_er Dennis Ilan,
who according to club pro did a
great job as guest speaker, Craig
Simpson of the Edmonton Oilers;
his brother Dave a former London
Knight, and Toronto Bluc Jays
mascot B:J: Birdie.
The plans for the ninth annual
Scatchard tournament are already
underway.

with Tigers
LONDON - Steve Howe, di-
rector of public relations for the
London Tigers, has announced
they have set a date for special
Exeter Day at Labatt Park.
Exeter Day will be Sunday,
August 20 when the London Ti-
gers take on the Reading Phil -
lies, a Philadelphia Phillies farm
team. Game time will be 1:30
'p.m. That day will also be Fan
Appreciation Day at the park .
The Tigers have set aside 500
tickets for the game that night.
The festivities will include; a
ceremonial first pitch by Exeter
mayor Bruce Shaw or another
municipal official, scoreboard
recognition and the Jug Band has
been asked to perform the na-,
tional anthem. Mayor Shaw has
said he will be glad to attend the
game on behalf of the town.
The Tigers, a Class AA affili-
ate for the Detroit Tigers, has set
aside special days for other,
towns in the area as well, like,
Seaforth, Wallaceburg and St.
Thomas, while some others are
currently being planned.
No special group bus packages
are planned but tickets are avail-
ble from the London Tiger's
ticket office at Labatt Park in
London or call 645-2255.

Canoe race successfully run
GRAND BEND - The 16th annu-
al Grand Bend Canoe race, spon-
sored by the.Ausable Bayfield Con-
servation Authority and the Grand
Bend Chamber of Commerce was
held under sunny skies Sunday.

the Ausable River in Grand Bend

The winners of the Junior Meri's
two-man canoe race were; Mike
Holmes and Jeff Sawdon, also of
Brucefield.
The winners of the Bantam
Men's two-man canoe race were;'
Jarrod Boily and Patrick Smith,
both of Brucefield.
Don Wills, of Caledonia, was the
winner of the C-1 Solo canoe race.
Don Stoneman of Winchester was
second, Dick Kloss of Brucefield
was third, Joe Farewell of Guelph
was fourth and Phil Neil of Bruce -
field placed fifth.
Ron Faik and Al Nichol, both of
Michigan, were the winners of the
two -men Amateur Canoe race, fol-
lowed by Paul Dockstader of Gode-
rich and Urb Buwalda of Denfield in
second, Mark and Chris Vanderfloeg
of Denfield finished third, Stan and
John Anusiewicz from Bright's
Grote was fourth and Kevin Nor-
wood and Mark Masur of Toronto
Was in fifth spot.
Wendy Buwalda of Denfield was
the first -place finisher in the Ladies
Kayak Division.
In the Men's "Kayak race, first
place went to Maks Zupan of Port
Elgin, followed by Terry Chappell
of Bramalea and Larry Fleet of Lon-
don.
EXETER - The Exeter Junior Co-
ops baseball team had no trouble
beating Clinton 9-3 in Exeter Wed-
nesday night, but found St. Marys a
little more difficult Sunday.
The locals gave up an unearned
run in the top of the seventh to lose
8-7 in the completion of an earlier
suspended game and the regularly
scheduled game ended in a 6-6.tie
and that game will have to be com-
pleted at a later date.
Against Clinton, the locals scored
once in each of• the first•three in-
nings and added three in the'fourth-
and sixth innings en rout to their
win.
Todd Laporte had three hits in
four at bats,. including two singles
and a double, and scored three
times, Fred Gregus went two for
fotir and scored one run and knocked
in one with a double, while single
hits went to Brent O'Brien, Jason
Keller, Scot Russell, Marty Mern-
er, Jim Lewis, Ross Keller; and Da-
vid Schwindt. Russell's hit' was a
two -run homer.
Jason Keller started on the hill for
the winners, followed by Scot Dav-
idson and Russell.
In the game against St. Marys
that was completed Sunday, the
leadoff batter singled, went to sec-
ond on a wild pitch, went to third
on an error by losing pitcher Rus-
sell and scored the unearned win-
ning run on a sacrifice fly.
Exeter had earlier picked up four
runs in the second, two in the
fourth and one in the sixth, before
the suspension of play in St. Marys
