Hold Special Olympics
By Roberta Walker
GODERICH - This year the Spe-
cial Olympics for Huron County
was held in Goderich on June 7,
Wednesday, at Goderich and District
Collegiate Institute. McCurdy Pub-
lic School, Wingham Public and
Victoria Public School (Goderich)
participated.
Thirty-three special education stu- . parents, and other helpers.
dents attended from McCurdy, com- Each competitor was assigned a
peting in various track and field high-school student to assist during
events like the 50 and 100 metre
dash, the standing and running long
jump, the high jump and the soft
ball throw.
The motto for the Special Olym-
pics is "Let Me Win, and If I Can-
not Win, Let Me Be Brave in the
Attempt!" In the spirit of such hope
and courage, the children all released
helium balloons, which ,quickly
soared into the beautiful blue sky, a
perfect day for the occasion.
Special guest at the opening cere-
monies was Dennis Hull, hockey
star of the Chicago Black Hawks
and Detroit Red Wings, who flew
from Chicago to spend the entire
day. He stayed to encourage the
youngsters and cheer their success-
es. He'll also be at the Scatchard
Tournament in Grand Bend this
week, to raise funds for his special
charity, handicapped children.
The day really belonged to the
children - running, jumping and
throwing their fastest, their hardest,
despite a wide variety of handicaps.
It is impossible to remain unmoved
by the valiant efforts of the children
and the dedicated staff of teachers,

the day's events, especially in the
arca of cheering each one on to new
heights of success.
Many thanks to organizers Brian
Moody and his staff at Victoria
School, and to the student commit-
tee.
One final look at all the happy
faces, ribbons pinned to the shirt of
each child, and the general air of
friendship, pointed to a day crowned
by successful endeavors. A sense of
accomplishment goes a long way
toward spurring a child on to further
success. That is the key to the Spe-
cial Olympics, giving all our chil-
dren, regardless of their perceived
abilities, a chance to try, a chance
to win.
