Times Advocate, 1989-06-14, Page 19Grand Bend Atom Girls team' drop pair of games GRAND BEND - The Grand Bend Atoin Girls baseball team played three times in the Usbome League last week and took a pair of losses on the chin. They lost their first game last Tuesday 19-15 to Usbome in Grand Bend, they won Thursday night over Fullerton 25-11 and lost Fri- day night to Crediton 22-9. In last Tuesdays game, Lisa Jen- nison took a close loss for Grand Bend, She struckout six batters in just three innings of work. Jennison also played well at the bat for Grand Bend. She knocked in .six runs with a grand slam and a bases -loaded single. Lisa Illman was the winning pitcher for Grand Bend in Thursday night's game. ' Jennison led the Grand Bend team offensively again with another homerun. Misty Zaranik and Erin Jennison each belted 4publes for the winners, Heather Stockermans had a single and Jill Russell knocked a triple. Lisa Jennison connected for an- other homer in Friday night's loss, with the bases empty in the fourth inning, while Jacquee Brown and Jill Russell each scored two runs. Their record now stands at two wins and four losses. Next game for the Atom -Girls is June 20 at the Grand Bend Legion diamond. The Grand Bend Pee Wee Boys team took a close 18-14 win over Hibbert and a game played in Grand Bend last Monday. Hibbert opened with a 4-0 lead in their half of the first and Grand Bend answered with seven of their own in their half of the first. Each team then picked up a pair of runs in the second. Hibbert added anoth- er in the third on back-to-back sin- gles in the third, but Grand Bend added three that inning to keep the lead. Grand Bend had a big fourth inning, picking up six tallies, while Hibbert threatened with sev- en in the fifth. Keys plays in the game were a sacrifice and a run batted in for Rob Galliford, who also stole two bas- es. Kyle Vermeullen also stole home for Grand Bend. These two key plays helped seal the victory. Jeremy Wilde also went two for three for the winners. Ryan Taylor picked up the win for Grand Bend on the mound, upping his record to 2-0. He al- lowed seven hits, one strikeout and five walks. The win improves their record to two wins and two losses. Grand Bend played in Exeter Monday night and in Crediton Tuesday night. Their next game is Monday night at home against Ful- lerton. All Grand Bend teams will play their parents at the Legion Diamonds Saturday morning and af- ternoon. The Grand Bend Pee Wee Sun- shine Girls edged out Hensall 18-16 in a game played in Grand Bend last Tuesday. Grand Bend's second baseman Jen- ny Raeburn and third baseman Don- na Jean Dietrich made some fine plays and good catches to help Grand Bend to the win. The wins im oves the team's record to 2-1 ov rall. The next g e for the Sunshine Girls is Thurs air night in Exeter against Exeter 1. Exeter Bantams win once and tie in two games EXETER - The Exeter Bantam baseball team won once and tied once in a pair of games last week. Last Tuesday they played in Dashwood and tied the contest 8-8 after six innings of play and Thurs- day they blasted Goderich 20-1 in Exeter. In last Tuesday's game, Exeter got on the board first with a run in th top of the first inning, but Dash- wood picked up two in the bottom of the first. Exeter went on to score three runs in the second and four in the third but Dashwood had to score once in the sixth to get the tie. They had picked up single single runs in the third and fourth innings. and four in the fifth before tying it in the sixth. Greg Agnew led Exeter, picking • up two singles, a double and a walk and scored three times, and stole three bases. Dave Van Dyken walked and scored twice, while Dar- ryl Parsons and Ryan Lindenfield also scored one run each. Fred Steciuk pitched the first four innings for Exeter, walking four and striking out four, Steve Farqu- har pitched one-third of an inning, walked four and struck out one, while Parsons completed the game, • walking one and fanning one. Mark Keller had a triple and walk and scored two runs for Dashwood, while Cam Rader walked twice and scored once. Exeter 20 Goderich 1 Exeter scored early and often in pounding in visitors in this game. The home team scored twice in the first, eight in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth en rout to their easy win. Goderich's lone run came in the sec- ond inning. Ryan Beckett singled three times for the winners and scored once, Ag- new singled and scored twice, Par- sons, singled twice, walked twice and scored twice, Steciuk and Farqu- har each scored three times on three hits each, while Steve Partridge sin- gled three times and scored twice. Exeter knocked out a total of 16 hits in the game, Lindenfield went the first three in- nings on the mound for Exeter, wallung one and fanning four. Ryan Stuart struck out a pair in an inning of work and Glavin worked two in- nings and fanned three. Co-ops lose to Lucan in pitching duel LUCAN - The. Lucan Juniors handed the Exeter Co-ops their first loss of the seaso#i Sunday when Lu - can beat the first -place Exetcr team 2-1 in Lucan. The Co-ops played to a 7-7 tie against St. Marys, a game that was called after six innings and will be completed Sunday in Exet- er. Sunday's contest was a pitching duel between Exeter's Scot Russell and Lucan's Sandy Hyde. Lucan got on the board first when Dan Jenkin singled stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Hyde. Lucan made it 2-0 with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Brown led the inning off with a walk, went to second on an error and scored on an error by Steve Nix- on. Exeter tried to start a rally in the seventh an managed to get one run by couldn't tie the game. Jeff Keller led the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, went to sec- ond when Fred Gregus singled and Beefed when Ross Keller was safe on an error. Hyde went the distance for Lucan and picked up the win. He allowed only the one run on three hits, walked four and fanned 13. Russel pitched the first five in- nings for Exeter, surrendering four hits, one earned run, three walks and five strike outs and was tagged with the tough loss. Gregus gave up the other run in the sixth inning, giv- ing up just one hit and two walks. - Exeter 7 St. Marys 7 In this game, Exeter struck first with four runs in the bottom of the second, but St. Marys came back with five in their half of the third. Exeter then took a 6-5 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth before fi- nally tying the game for good in the sixth. - - Rowe Fuels Tykes off to slow start EXETER The local Exeter "Rowe Fuels" Tyke hardball team, got off to a slow start on May 16. The Exeter team suffered from lack of practice as they got blasted 23 - 4 by a much stronger St. Mar- ys team. Taking the brunt of the onslaught was,starting pitcher Paul Van Dyken. After struggling through two in- nings, he was replaced by Todd Re- degald, who pitched extremely well, 1-,.1 tt, no avail as Exeter had already ',lined themselves deeply. Swinging solid bats for Exeter, were Ryan Soldan one for one, two walks, Van Dyken two for three, two R.B.I ' Chris Straw one for three, Trevor O e.one for one, one walk, Redegald ne for two, Jason Lindenfield one for two, Mark Par- sons turned in a fine defensive game at second base. On June 3, Exeter travelled to Dashwood for their second game of the season. Having now had ample time for practice, the locals jumped on Dashwood pitching for eight runs in the second inning and from there, coasted to a 17-5 victory. Todd Re- degald pitched the entire game, al- lowing five runs while striking out seven batters. At the plate, Exeter was much improved with solid performances by Ryan Soldan, 4 walks, Mark Parsons two for three, one walk two R.B.I.'s, Michael Schwindt two for two, two walks ,two R.B.I.'s, Bryce Flinn four walks, Ryan Beckett one for two, two walks, Jason Lindenfield, two for three, one walk, one R.B.I: June 6 was the date for their third game on Exeter's schedule as they hosted Lucan. Exeter continued to improve as they scored eight runs in the first two innings enroute to an 1841 victory. . This game, Paul Van Dyken started on the mound, pitching four excellent innings before going way to Todd Redegald. Coming through with the bats were Michael Schwindt, four walks, one R.B.I., Paul—Van Dyken four walks, two R.B.I.'s, Jeremy Janke one for two, two walks, three R.B.I's, Bryce Hann two for three, one walk," four R.B.I.'s, Michael Coolman, one for three, one walk, Redegald one for three, one walk. On Saturday June 10, Exeter took their 2.1 record to Goderich. Here they got off to a slow start in the cold weather and found themselves trailing 11-3 after four innings. From there they stormed back to tic it 16-16 going into the bottom of the seventh. • Then they lost a heartbreaker, on a two -out run scored on a passed ball. The Cowgirls travel to Sebring- ville tomorrow night for their next action at 9:00 p.m. Crediton 3 - Mitchell 2 In their first win, the ladies.had some very strong competition from a team from Mitchell. Mitchell is a young club who showed some great defensive plays. Teresa McGee and Mary McKil- lop worked together in the second inning to take the lead•with a score of 1-0 but their opponents came back and 'overtook Crediton 2-1 in' the fifth inning. In the sixth inning, McGee got on base with a walk and Brenda Wilds, Kate Steeper and Kelli Phil- lips with singles sent McGee home to tie the game. To take the win, Lori Devlae- minck, Brenda Morgan and Brenda Wilds used their bat to bring in the winning run. • Teresa McGee and Brenda•Mor- gan shared strong pitching chores. Strong defensive plays were made by Lori Devlaeminck and Karen Williams. Crediton 19 - Dublin 3 In their second win of the week, Crediton used every inning to add more runs to their score and end the game using the mercy rule at five innings. Teresa McGee and Deb Lord shared pitching duties for the local squad and were three for three trips to the plate. , Kelli Phillips shone in her debut as catcher and Teresa McGee stopped anything coming her way on third base. Crediton 9 Denfield 4 The Cowgirls found themselves on the losing side of a ball game against Denfield untiTthe third in- ning when they came alive and took the lead 3-2. The local squad kept the momen- tum going for the next four innings to take the win. Marilyn Young had a successful night with a double and a single. Teresa Van Raay was two for two trips to the plate with a triple and a home run. Debbie Lord also helped seal the win with a double and a single. Kelli Phillips,' Brenda Morgan, Kate Steeper, Sue Muller and Kathy Gielen added singles. Debbie Lord and Brenda Morgan shared pitching duties. Sue Muller, Brenda Morgan and Brenda Wilds played strong defen- sively. Kelli Phillips again played a steady catcher's position but will gladly give the spot back to Tam- my Regier who is taking a few weeks off to go on a honeymoon. Brent O'Brien led the Exeter attack with two hits in two trips and one run scored. Ross Keller had two hits in four trips and also scored a run, and knocked in a run.
