Seniors deserve respect
The following article was written
by Sharon Yurcich, administrator of
Heritage Lodge in Simcoe. She is
the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Key Carpenter of Exeter.
It has taken a major demographic
shift, to highlight a weakness in our
language and culture.
Now that the Canadian popula-
tion is clearly aging, we're reading
and hearing a lot morikmessdges
aimed at seniors. For a culture
that's bistorically endorsgd youth
and tiptoed around aging, it's be-
coming obvious that the way we
think and talk need to be changed. -
Growing old in North America
has never been a glamorous con-
cept. We give our elderly popula-
tion plenty of lip service but, un-
like other cultures which revere
their seniors, very little we do actu-
ally demonstrates respect.
Consider our language: "She
looks good for her age"; "He's past
his prime"; "The hair rinse set";
"Age before beauty"; "Over the
hill"; and the list goes on...
Clearly, the word "old" isn't very
complimentary. It's become synon-

Let's get acquainted - join us for coffee and donuts
next Friday and Saturday
ymous with the likes of "Withered",
"decrepit", and "useless". And whit
about "retired"? Webster himself
defines it as "to withdraw"!
No question. We are all guilty of
pigeonholing our seniors.
One media pundit recently sug-
gested, if seniors were an ethnic
group, the stereotyping we cast on
them would surely shift human
right activists into full gear!
Seniors have told us, in countless
studies, they don't even like the
term "seniors". Sadly, being older
in North America connotes a person
who's no longer able to contribute.
Nothing could be further from the
facts! Canadians over the age of 65
represent a goldmine of experience
and knowledge. For the most part,
they've earned, and deserve, our re-
spect. And, while other cultures
have known this all along, North
Americans continue to struggle
with the concept.
As one retiree aptly put it, "Age
is a matter of attitude. I'm retread-
ed, not retired."
When it comes to aging we could
all benefit from a fresh attitude.
