Salmon Delby set for
comeback next year
GRAND BEND The first ever
Grand Bend Salmon Derby has
proved itself as a viable sporting
event and fishermen can expect 11
to return bigger and better next
spring said event organizers at an
awards night held Saturday evening
at the Pinedale Hotel.
• Jim Kaempf asked an audience of
award winners, fishermen, and
sponsors whether another derby
should be organized for next year
and he was greeted with a solid
round of applause.
"We have a good nucleus of fish-
ermen," said Kaempf, adding that
their strong support was especially
evident considering the poor weath-
er.
Kaempf thanked the sponsors,
calling them the cornerstone of the
derby.
"They're people who believed in
us, not only their money helped,
but their moral support.
He thanked supporters for believ-
ing a derby was possible in Grand
Bend, even though it is generally
recognized the best salmon fishing
grounds are further south around
Kettle Point.
"There's a feeling among Grand
Bend natives that the fish are out
there," said Kaempf, echoed by a
round of laughter in the room.
Plans for 1990's Salmon Derby
start in just two weeks, and Kaempf
said that early hopes are to,tie the
event in with the Blue Water An-
glers so that as their derby ends the
Grand Bend contest begins. The
idea is that a longer event spanning
two weekends instead of one runs a
better chance of encountering favor-
able weather.
This year, the fishing on the sec-
ond day of the five-day derby was
completely ruined by high winds.
The top award of S 1,000 for
catching a 15.71 Ib salmon went to
Norm Aitken of London. The S600
second prize was awarded to Randy
Keene, also of <London, for his
14.35 Ib catch. Thirdze of $300
was garnered by a 14.02 Ib salmon
caught by Ron Rupert of Grand
Bend ..
Another 11 donated prizes were
awarded to the fourth to 15th place
winners. Rods and reels went to
the top fish of the day winners and
other prizes to those who caught
fish closest to the day's mystery
weight.
The derby was also able to raffle
off a variety of fishing -related prizes
to those with entry tickets. Zickets
were sold for a draw on an outboard
motor, which was won by Anthony
Stump of London.
