Dashwood family escape
smoke -filed house in
early hours of morning
DASHWOOD - A Dashwood
family wcrc awakened in the early
hours of Friday morning to a
smoke-filled house, but wcrc able
to get to safety. The fire depart-
ment arc calling the escape fortu-
nate since the house was not
equipped with smoke detectors.
The Dashwood fire department
were called to the Fried Street home
of Cathy Cade at 3:45 a.m. after her
son Brandon awoke to the smell of
smoke. -
"The house was just full of
smoke," said fire chief Jim Hoff-
man, who said the fire started in the
attic directly above the son's bed-
room.
Hoffman said he dreaded to think
what might have happened had the
family not awakcncd when they did.
"They were very lucky to gel out
- with no smoke detectors,' said
Hoffman. "Just a few more min-
utes..."
With the family outside in their
pyjamas, the fire department used
respirators and found the source Of
the fire within minutes. They put
out the blaze quickly, but remained
on the scene until 7 a.m. to make
sure nothing rekindled.
"They did a good job keeping the
water damage down and getting to
the fire," said Hoffman of the vol-
unteer department.
Even though the fire was confined
to the attic and bedrooms, an un-
confirmed guess at the damage plac-
es it in the neighborhood of $10-
15 ,000.
Ontario Hydro inspectors have
studied the source of the fire and
have ruled out an electrical fault as
its cause. Hoffman said the fire
.will likely be recorded as having an
undetermined causc.
"Wc just don't know what to put
it down as," he said.
Causes undermined - The Dashwood Fire Department got this mysterious house fire unjler control
quickly.
