Wide choice offered
at Huron Ridge Acres
Sticking to one's list is almost impossible, when shopping
for plants and flowers at Huron Ridge Acres. Seventeen green-
houses encompassing 40,000 square feet are filled with flowers
and foliage in every colour of the rainbow piled on tables,
hanging overhead, and sitting in pots on the floor. The temp-
tation to add a flat of double ruffled peppermint petunias or a
batch of dwarf French marigolds dressed in burnt orange and
bright yellow is almost impossible to resist.
The Huron Ridge greenhouses, located about five miles
northwest of Zurich, contain 30,000 regular geraniums alone,
plus 3,000 six-inch plants, 12,000 seed geraniums and 1,000
stock plants in two -gallon pots. There are six series of petun-
ias, each grown in a full range of colours.
Late spring plains take up 2,000 square feet of space.
Proprietors Paul and Carol Steckle offer customers a full
range of bedding plants - annuals, perennials, florals and vege-
tables. Among the less common items are flowering kale,
nicotiana and burning bush.
An attractive outdoor setting displays the nursery's line of
decorative and flowering shrubs and trees, evergreens, founda-
tion planting, lawn specimes and fruit trees.
Half of the Steckles' ever-increasing business is now whole-
sale. Huron Ridge vans are kept busy this time of year mak-
ing deliveries to surrounding towns, and as far away as South-
ampton.
A steady stream of customers ambled through the green-
houses during the Victoria Day weekend, the time most gard-
eners begin -their spring planting. Browsers are always -wel-
come. Just walking around, drinking in the riot of colour, is .a
treat. Few come away empty-handed. Most succumb to the
almost limitless choice of variety and hue, and pick up some-
thing for the garden, the planter, the patio or the windowsill.
