Royals season
finally underway
EXETER - After two cancella-
tions the previous week due to poor
weather conditions, the Exeter Roy-
als got their 1989 South Perth Fast -
ball League season underway last
week with three games in four
nights.
On Tuesday, they travelled to
Milverton where they suffered a 3-0
setback at the hands of the home
club. A lack of offence proved to be
their downfall as they managed only
one hit, a double by Rod Johnson,
off winning hurler Trevor Jutzi.
Greg Wise took the loss as he
gave up an unearned run in the first
inning and two runs in the eighth
on a bloop single with' two on and
two out. Wise allowed seven hits,
struck out 10 and walked one.
The Royals returned home Thurs-
day to face defending league champi-
on Mitchell Mets.
Led by the two hit pitching of
Derwyn Hodgins, they scored a 6-0
victory. Hodgins struck out 10 and
walked two in going the distance.
Offensively Scott Brintnell led the
way with a triple and two walks in
four plate appearances. He also
drove in two runs and scored a run.
Pete Tuckey, Brent Dawson, Tom
Tordoff with an RBI single, and Jim
Allison added safeties.
The game marked the dcbut for
Hodgins, a native of McGillivray
Township, who also pitches for
Sarnia Ranson in the Senior Inter -
City Fastball League. The former
Memorial League Most Valuable
Pitcher, and one of the top-rated
fastball pitchers in Ontario, will be
available on a part-time basis as his
schedule with Sarnia allows.
On Friday night, Royals travelled
to Mitchell to play the Junior Gla-
diators and emerged with a 7-4 vic-
tory. The offence reflected the busy
schedule as they totalled 10 hits
with Brent Dawson leading the way
with a double, two singles, two
runs scored and two runs batted in.
Winning pitcher Greg Wise added
a double and single in three official
trips and drove in -a pair of runs.
Wise went the distance for the
victory. He gave up 11 hits, struck
out 17 and did not walk a batter.
Royals' next action will be at
home Thursday at 9 p.m. with Ful-
larton A's providing the opposition.
Lucan Juniors play to tie
LUCAN - The Lucan Junior
Baseball team played St. Marys for
the second consecutive time last
week. They won the first game
May 14 by 6-3 score by last
Wednesday's game in St. Marys
ended in a strange 8-8 draw.
Lucan also played host to Exeter
on Sunday and came out on the
short end of a 29-12 slug fest.
Against St. Marys, Lucan was
held down early in the game by
strong St. Marys pitching of Scott
Riddell and were lacking the ability
to cash in runners from scoring po-
sition.
St. Marys chipped away at the
Lucan pitching and lcd 7-1 heading
into the top of the ninth.
Lucan started their half' of the
ninth with a double by Chris He-
witt, followed by a single by Steve
Johnson which scored Hewitt. The
locals scored seven more timcs that
inning and led 8-7 heading into the
bottom of the ninth.
St. Marys managed to get even in
their half of the inning, getting the
tying run as the result of a two -out
error by a Lucan player. The game
was then called because of the late
hour.
The key to Lucan's last -inning
heroics was the base on balls given
up the St. Marys pitcher.
Sunday Lucan was able to score
12 times on three Exeter pitchers
but unfortunately they surrendered
29 runs.
Steve Nixon reached base four
times with two singles and scored
two runs. Chris Smith had a pair of
singles a scored a run. Sandy Hyde
knocked a pair of triples and scored
twice. Steve Johnson and Lee
Matheson hit a pair of singles and
also scored twice.
Next game for Lucan is Monday
when they travel to Scaforth for a'
6:30 p.m. -game.
