Award of merit for SHDHS band
BOSTON - South Hwon District
High School's concert band received
an award of merit for their participa-
tion in the International Music Fes-
tival in Boston, Massachusetts on
the weekend.
At Norwood Junior High School
1 in Norwood; a suburb of Boston,
seven performing groups consisting
of choirs, concert bands and stage
bands, competed against a set stan-
dard to receive their awards.
The festival was just the icing of
the cake of an exciting four-day stay
in Boston. Following a short con-
cert enroute at Runnymede Colle-
giate in Toronto, the band relaxed
for two days of sightseeing. A
two-hour historical walking tour of
the Freedom Trail, introduced the
group to sites such as the Old State
House, Boston Common, The New
Legislature Building on Beacon Hill
where a group of Bostonians were
soap boxing against gay rights, and
the Granary Burying Ground which.
includes graves of such historical
figures as Samuel Adams, the par-
ents .of Benjamin Franklin, Paul
Revere, the- four.victimsbf the Bos-
ton Massacre and Mary Goose alias
Mother Goose. The Bull and -
Finch, better known as "Cheers" 'N
from the weekly sit-com, was an-
other stop on the tour.
The group got a .taste' of sea life
while visiting the New England
Aquarium and taking an eight-hour
whale watching expedition on the I
Atlantic Ocean. We sighted two
hump back whales, a mother an its
calf, who circled the boat for two
hours, coming within a few [neves
of the boat. South Huron science
teacher, George McEwan, NO ac-
companied the students, felt the
group was very lucky -to sec as
much of the whales as they did.
Despite cold temperatures and a fear
of sea sickness, all of us found the
tour very enjoyable. Manystudents
were fascinated that the whales "put
so much trust in humansuand said
the tour "was interesting and a lot
more fun than I expected,'
In their spare time, some students
found"the time to shop, each a mo-
vie
or visit an amusempt park lo-
cated near the hotel.

Federated Women's Institutes of
Ontario (FWIO) as a small group of
rural ladies having a, cup of tea
while they quilt and gossip the time
away. Wrong.
Or is your idea of Federated
Women's Institutes of Ontario as a
farm and rural group of women
who; assist and encourage women
to become knowledgeable and re-
sponsible citizens; promote an de-
velop good family life skills; help
discover, stimulate and develop
leadership; help identify and resolve
needs in the community.

As people who live in rural and
small towns of Ontario, FWIO
members arc vitally concerned
about what happens to the farms
and the farm families.
Did you know FWIO members
spend thousands of volunteer hours,
leading 4H clubs, working on
County Farm Safety Associations,
working with local rural fairs (the
showcase of the farmers), working
with agriculture in the classroom,
attending and promoting work-
shops.
It was FWIO, in 1984, that ini-
tiated the first rural childcare pro-

gram in Ontario, and are still vital-
ly concerned with this topic.
Throughout the year the local
branches have speakers and go on
tours on a variety of agricultural
topics that are of concern to them.
Education ofresponsible citizens
has lead FWIO to have numerous
scholarships, money the members
have donated, so that the young cit-
izens or rural Ontario can receive
further training. FWIO is not -ask-
ing for a government handout but
doing something about a need.
To help future generations of On-
tario understand the rich heritage of
Ontario's past, W.I. members have
and are actively recording the local
historiesof the farming communi-
ties. With the current crisis in the
farming community it is essential
that this history be recorded and
W.I. members are spending thou-
sands of volunteer hours doing just
that as well as using their own
money on this project. Have you
seen -one of the Tweedsmuir History
Books?
Our 1988-89 theme of Waste -
Management -Recycling has meant
that W.I. members have been ac-
tively involved in projects in their
community. Our 1989-90 theme of
Women and the Environment will
give the members even more work
to do.
June 1989 is Women's Institute
Month in Ontario. This will give
the public a chance to find out
about an organization that is 92
years young and facing the next
100 years with the same enthu-
siasm and commitment, as when
they were first started.
