Area teenagers
preparing for
mission work
HURON COUNTY - Last year it
was Poland, with the whole Scott
family. This year Teen Missions In-
ternational (T.M.I.) is on the move
again, with three young men from
our arca. Dan Wiegand and Rob
Hoffman are off to Assiout, Egypt
and Darcy Scott is off to Florida, to
the newly organized Pre -teen Boot
Camps set up for kids aged 10-13
years.
Darcy Scott, 13, from Zurich,
leaves for Boot Camp June 27, and
will be on the Puppet Evangelism
team. Darcy will be receiving inten-
sive training in the use of his Bible,
puppets, balloons and song to bring
the Good News of the Lord to those
in nursing and rest homes and
churches in the surrounding area of
Merritt Island, Florida. He will then
be able to bring this knowledge
home to our arca.
The Obstacle Course (Q.C.),
washing his own dishes and clothes
arc all part of his training as well.
Classes in Bible [narking, Scripture
memory verses, letter writing are
also included every day.
Dan Weigand, 18, has been inter-
ested in Teen Missions for about a
year, and Rob Hoffman, 20 for'
about six months. Dan and Rob,
both from Dashwood, leave for the
Lord's Boot Camp on Junc 15,
where after a two-day bus ride will
get to meet for the first time the
other 33 teens on their team.
For the next two weeks they will
have classes in construction techni-
ques, puppets, balloons, bible verse
memory work, and singing.
Their Bibles will be their guide-
books and they will have classes in
how to use them most effectively.
These classes will continue daily for
the remainder of their project.
Before breakfast there is the Ob-
stacle Course, a strenuous series of
running, climbing, crawling,
swinging, (and occasionally an un-
scheduled swim) through various
pieces of equipment. This develops
team -work.
Culmination of Boot Camp is
Commissioning Service at which
each teen lights a candle to signify
that he or she wants to be the Lord's
light standard wherever they are in
the world.
On arriving in Egypt, they will
construct playground facilities for
the Lillian Trasher Orphanage
which houses about 600 orphans
and young widows. Teaching,
working, and playing with these
children for six weeks then leaving
them to come home could be the
hardest part of their project. The
closeness that develops between the
team and the nationals is hard to de-
scribe.
Debrief in Switzerland is one
week of R&R (rest and recreation),
sightseeing, and more classes in
Christian living, preparing slide
presentations and how to cope with
re -integration into secular society.
