"We only had about 10 guys sign up to play this year and we knew we couldn't run.a team with that many so we just decided to drop out for this year," said Tony Mennen, of the Colonials. Mennen said the lack of interest caught him by surprise this year but interest comes in phrases and doesn't think they will be gone long from the league. ' "It was sort of unexpected, but all teams go through stages like that. Guys move up or move away, and go to college and there is nothing. you can do about that. I have been playing for a lot. of .years, but .I think I will sit this year out and just cnjoy myself," said Mennen. Mennen, who is also president of the Grand Bend Soccer Association, said all other minor soccer levelsin the .village will be played as usual this summer. Mennen said some of the Coloni- al players who wanted to play, have signed up with other teams in the league, including the Exeter Cen- tennials, but most will also sit this yearout as well. Exeter coach Dick Lord said one player from the Colonials played in the Centennials opening game Sun- day, which they lost 7-0 to London in Exeter, but added he will wel- come more players from Grand Bend if any are interested. Graltd Bend's drop out leaves eight teams, Nairn, Wallaceburg, Strathroy, Chatham, Real West, Wallacetown, Chatham Express and Exeter, in the Western Division of the London and District Soccer League. . Lord said Sunday's game was the coldest opening gamebf the season in the seven years he has been asso- ciated with the Centennials. He added the cold and blustery winds played.havoc with the team's performance but London's experi- ence was also very evident. "It really looked like our first game out there but they, (London), have been playing inside all winter and we just couldn't compete with that, but we will get better," said Lord The Centennials'- will play next ganrtite Sunday night at 6 in Strathroy. • Ladies hold first night at Ironwood EXETER - The Exeter Ladies Golf Ladies held its inaugural night Monday night, and despite cool at the .
