EXETER - Gerald Papple is
looking for people who won't go
back on a decision. Eleven of
them turned out Sunday at South
Huron District High School to
learn the ways of becoming base-
ball umpires.
The four-hour classroom style
course taught the candidates the fin-
er points of making the calls on
hardball games, with special em-
phasis on the new rules for 1989.
This was the first time Papple
had organized such a clinic and he
hopes, if enough interest is gener-
ated, a new umpires' association
might be in the making.
"If I get enough people I want to
start my own association for the
Exeter area,". he said. Papple used
to belong to the now -defunct Us-
bome Umpires' Association and his
reasons for wanting a new organi-
zation are simple: with the interest
in hardball on the rise, the demand
for umpires increases.
Papple says he gets frequent calls
from people looking for an umpire
for a game, league or tournament.
An association, he explains, will
make it easier to get hold of quali-
fied umpires. •
• • "It would be nice to know a few
guys I could call for umpiring," be
said.
Papple, himself -an umpire for
four years, brought in Paul Collins
-from Waterloo to conduct the clin-
ic. The class was shown a film,
led through a question and answer
period, and tested on their knowl-
edge of the rules.
This single session produced 11
new umpires, ranging in age from
14 to 40, qualified to mediate in
the league of their choice. Several
of the candidates mentioned that the
$25 registration fee for the course
was well worth the opportunity to
become, and be paid as, an umpire..
