The volunteers came from Windsor, Sar- nia, Chatham, and of course smaller centres. The goal of the Red Cross is to collect the safest blood possible and to have it available. when 'needed. This can only be done with more intensive health screening and blood donation safety forms. The Apheresis Department is yet another program covered by the Red Cross. Apheresis a Greek word meaning "Removal or is used to describe a specialized method of col- lecting blood products. Two blood products, plasma and platelets, are collected from the donors. It was impressed on the volun- teers that its people, the donors, who really count. The Red Cross tries to provide people with an op- portunity to make a significant gift to the sick and injured. We the vol- unteers have to work as a team to make sure this happens. The afternoon was very informa- tive, hearing how blood can be so important to many people. First we heard from Holly McLennan, a transplant team nurse from Univer- sity Hospital. Before any donor transplant can be done, blood must be available and they work closely with the Red Cross for this pro- gram. Jim Swan with Community Re- lations TV London spoke.on how and why he had become a blood donor. ti A mother of a Leukemia patient, and a man who is a blood recipient and has received over 200 pints of blood told their story of how im- portant is the blood collected at our clinics, and how it has saved their lives and given them a few more years to enjoy life. We never know when we are go- ing to need blood and its nice to know that the Red Cross strives to keep the blood supply in readiness for demand. First it is necessary to identify. ways in which women are being limited - through poverty, oppres- sive systems, and famine. Then we need as church women to become aware of the place of women in our fellowships and communities and in the world; and finally to discover ways in which people of faith can help.
