"The Box Office has only been open two weeks and several performances are approaching the sold -out level" says Joel Harris, General Manager of the Blyth Festi- val, The comedy centers on Eldon Currie, farmer and life-long resident of Persephone Township who hank- ers for the fame and glory of politi- cal life - until the night a truck car- rying atomic waste comes. -hurtling into his ditch. The threat of a nucle- ar spill in his 'Own backyard and the schemes of the provincial manda- rins who descend upon his farm to help, provide the "man -who -would- be -reeve" with more experience than he ever dreamed possible! Dan Needles has experienced a varied career - former editor of Shel- burne Free Press and Economist, a southern Ontario weekly newspa- per; assistant to various Ontario Cabinet Ministers at Queen's Park from 1976-81 and Public Affairs Director for Canada Life until 1988 when he left to pursue writing pro- jects full-time. He makes his home in .Collingwood with wife Heath and daughter Madeline where he raisessheepin his spare time. "When I began writing in 1974, a lot of what I grew up with was dis- appearing" says Needles. "It wasn't just that all the farms were being sold at exaggerated prices, but that the community was breaking up. The way of life that had been there for 140 years was changing in ways that weren't benefiuing anyone. The writing was really two-pronged, I wanted to hang on to what was dis- appearing and I wanted to make people realize what was being lost." Walt Wingfield and his neigh- bours eighbours in Persephone Township have become legendary thanks to writer Dan Needles and actor Rod Beattie who portrayed the Wingfield character on stage since 1985.
