Irish dig themselves another hole
LUCAN - Once again, the Lucan
Irish hake their backs against the
wall.
The Irish have fallen behind three-
games-to-one
hroegames-to-one in the best -of -seven
Junior D division finals against the
Tavistock Braves, after the ['raves
picked up a pair of wins on the
weekend.
In the previous series against the
Exeter Hawks, the Irish also trailed
three games to .one and came back
to win that series, taking the rubber
game in double overtime.
Tavistock won the third game of
the division finals 7-3 Friday night
at the Lucan Arena and Sunday
night's fourth game back in Tavis-
tock by a 4-3 count, picking up the
winning goal with only 13 seconds
left in regulation.
The story of Sunday night's game
was the hot goaltending of Tavis-
tock's Derrick Martin. The Irish
outshot the Braves 25-11 in the
third period, but could only manage
two goal goals in that period.
Irish coach Dave Revington felt
Martin was the difference.
"The way we played I thought we
deserved to win but Martin made
some unbelievable stops. We still
didn't play 60 minutes of hockey
and for us to win playing 60 min-
utes is what it is what going to
take," said Revington.
Revington said the players are not
discouraged and still think they can
win the series.
Lucan outshot Tavistock 44-35 in
the game.
Mark Albrecht, Brian Eaton, Paul
Norris and Tim Yantzi scored for
Tavistock, Yanzti's winner with
just 13 seconds left.
Scoring for the Irish were; Jon
McEachem from Brad Muir, Paul
Barnes from Dean Doerr and Jamie
Pearce and Scott Denomy from
McEachem and Tim Hayter.
The Irish tied the series at one
game each with a 9-7 win in over-
time at the Lucan Arena last Tues-
day night.
The Irish led 3-2 after one period
of play but the- game was dead-
locked at 4-4 headinginto the sec-
ond intermission.. Each team scored
three times in the third to -force -
overtime. The Irish scored twice in
the first 10 minute overtime ses-
sion, including a shorthanded goal
by Paul Barnes to seal the win.
Tim Hayter scored first, at 4:04
of the first, from Dean Doerr and
Scott Denomy, and they went up 2-
0 just over two minutes later when
Glen Marshall scored from Barnes
and Dcnomy.
The lead was increased to 3-0
when Brian Schuyler connected
from Jon McEachern and Jeff Hirt-
zell, at 12:33 of the opening frame.
Tavistock finally got on the board
just 1:15 after Lucan's third goal of
the game, with Paul Norris slip-
ping the puck past Doug Haskett in
the Lucan net from Charlie Lupton
and Mark Albrecht. The lead was
then cut to a single goal with 31
seconds left in the first when Al-
brecht clicked from Dave Campbell
and Mike Kohlmaier. Both Tavis-
tock goals in the first period came
while they were enjoying a man ad-
vantage.
The game was tied at 3-3 at 1:11
of the second when Campbell
scored the third -straight power -play
goal for the Braves,- from Dave
Wiffen and Norris.
The Irish got that back at 6:37 of
that period when Hirtzell scored
from Dean Schram.
But that Icad was shortlived as al-
most three minutes later the game
was tied once again, when Steve
Hagendom scored.
The Braves had taken a 7-4 lead
after scoring three quick goals early
in the -final period. At 3:13 Kohl-
maier scored from Norris and Tim
Yantzi, at•3:45 Yantzi scored from
Kohlmaier and Albrecht and at 4:41
Norris scored from Kohlmaier and
Albrecht.
The Irish comeback started at
6:06 of the third when Joe Febrey
scored from Brad Muir and Barnes,
while on the power play. At 8:32
Muir scored his first of three
straight. from Febrey and Rick
Wcishar and the game was tied once
again at 15:17 with -Muir scoring
once again, from Febrey and Mar-
shall..
ar-shall..
Muir completed his hat trick and
put the Irish in front for good at
8:20 of the first overtime when he
scored from Marshall and Barnes
added an unassisted, insurance goal
with just seven seconds Icft to
play. -
Tavistock 7 Lucan 3
The story of this game, also
played at the Lucan Arena Friday
night, was the momentum swings
that occurred during various times
in the game. •
The first period belonged to Ta-
vistock and despite outplaying Lu -
can most of that period, they could
only manage a 1-0 Icad after one pe-
riod.
The second period belonged to
Lucan and scored three times that
period to Tavistock'~ pair, but Lu -
can did control most of the play.
Nick Banbury gave the visitors a
1-0 lead with his first -period goal
from Zeigler.
Scoring for the Irish in the second
period were; Barnes from Muir and
Febrey, Doerr from Wcishar and
Barnes from Schram and Muir, but
that was all they could manage as
Tavistock goalie. Martin shut the
door on them the rest of the way.
Scoring for Tavistock in the sec-
ond period were; Dave Wiffen from
Albrecht and Darryl McIntosh, Al-
brecht from Brian Eaton and Lup-
ton, Eaton unassisted, and in the
third, Albrecht scored from Wiffen
and Albrecht, Steve Hagendorn
from Zeigler and Kohlmaier and
Campbell from Spencer Rowland,
while on the power -play.
Lucan had a few disagreements
with referee Phil Sherwood in the
game and were not afraid of letting
him hear what they were. Goaltend-
er Doug Haskett received a 10 -
minute misconduct in the first peri-
od for using abusive language and
disputing with an official, as did
Brad Muir, Todd Hayter and Graham
Hutton late in the third period.
The fifth and possibly final game -
in the series was scheduled for the
Lucan Arena, yesterday, Tuesday
night.
If a sixth game is needed it will
be played Friday night at the Tavis-
tock Arena and game is is tentative-
ly scheduled for Sunday back in Lu -
can.
Scoring with players - Tavistock Braves goalie Derrick Martin makes the stop here on the puck as
