Wingfield progresses at
London's Grand Theatre
EXETER - Anyone attending the
Grand Theatre in London Friday
night will agree that Walt Wing-
field has made some progress.
The show Wingfield's Progress is
a continuation of Letter from
Wingfield's Farm. Both are written
by Dan Needles, a former editor of
the Shelburne Free Press and Econ-
omist.
Needles won the Ontario Com-
munity• Newspaper Association
best column award in 1976 for the
letters he wrote under the pen name
of Walt Wingfield.
Walt Wingfield played by Rod
Beattie pokes fun not only at the
rural folks, but at the city slickers
who seek the tranquility of the
country.
Beattie in his one-man show
plays 17 different characters and
portrays each one in a very indivi-
dualistic manner.
As Walt Wingfield, Beattie keeps
the pace of the show moving quick-
ly from the first imaginary letter to
Ed in Toronto.
Wingfield left his stock broker's
job in the big city to buy a 100
acre farm and his letters describe all
the unique situations he finds him-
self in.
When a developer from the city
tries to establish urban living in the
country without the smells and
sounds of the farm, he is soon sent
packing by Wingfield and his cro-
nies with the help of a threshing
machine and a manure spreader.
Wingfield's Progress , a fun show
and suitable for persons of all ages
continues at the Grand until May 6.
The stage manager for this show
is Melissa Veal of Exeter.
