Shirley Keller speaks
to Varna UC women
VARNA - Shirley Keller of
Goderich was the guest speaker at
Varna United Church Women's
springs Thankoffering meeting on
Thursday evening. She had a pow-
erful message about the responsi-
bility of Christians in today's world
in her topic "the Changing Posi-
tion of the Organized Christian
Church". She criticized the church
for going along with popular opin-
ion. "God needs you and me to
bring some sanity to a world gone
astray" she stated, and to tell Jesus'
message of salvation. Many people
are no longer familiar with the
Holy Scriptures, few join Bible
study groups. Critics say the
church is outdated and irrelevant.
Shirley's own Lutheran Church
has been steadfast in upholding
Bible teachings and declaring it the
inspired word of God, but she criti-
cized it and other organized church-
es for being too political, having
only people of wealth and power in
its highest offices. While officials
argue over administrative trifles,
their people are in need of someone
to visit them, teenagers are in need
of counselling and direction, there
is a great exodus of people who feel
the church has nothing for them.
Jesus didn't wait for the people to
come to him, he went to them
wherever they were. Shirley. feels
deeply that church people have to
go out to be with the world and
meet the needs of people where
they are. We have to make the
church come alive for those who
are seeking a meaningful relation-
ship with God. In conclusion, she
said that the organized church must

become such a force for Christ that
Satan will run and hide. This is, of
course, only a short summary of
her compelling message. Shirley
was thanked by Bentice Reid.
President Deb Rathwell wel-
comed visitors from Brucefield,
Kippen, Bayfield and Goshen, and
announced the dessert euchre being
held next Wednesday at the Com-
plex and the Spring Presbyterial
Event in St. John's Church, Strat-
)'ord on April 18.
Worship was based on Jesus' ap-
pearance to the disciples on the road
to Emmaus, and was led by Marjo-
rie Stirling, Bernice Reid and Mary
Chessell. A double duet comprised
of Deb Rathwell, Brenda Consitt,
Joyce Dowson and Mona Stephen-
son provided special music. Shirley
Hill was the organist. The offering
was received by Carol Simons and
Margaret McClymont.
A pleasant social hour followed
