Mohawks are Ontario's best
LUCAN - "This is sweet".
That is how Exeter Mohawk captain Mark Soch-
ner felt after his team captured the OHA Senior B
championship Sunday night at the Lucan Arena.
The Mohawks won the all -Ontario championship
in rather convincing fashion, disposing of the Dres-
den LumberKings in four -straight games in the fi-
nals.
,.They won the opening game last Sunday night,
April 2 by a 5-2 count, game two last Wednesday
night in Lucan and game three Friday night both by
8-4 scores and clinched the provincial title in grand
fashion whipping Dresden 10-4 Sunday night.
"1 am pretty excited about the whole thing," ex-
claimed Soehner. "This is the first time for me but
some of the guys have waited a lot longer than I
have. It is a different feeling but one 1 don't mind
having." -
Soehner said the difference in the series was the
inability of Dresden to keep up with the fast -skating
Mohawks.
"I think the big thing was they (Dresden) couldn't
skate with us. We also got big goaltending when we
needed it and big games from guys that hadn't played
a lot all year like, Urby (Wayne Urbshott), and
Howie, (Dale Timmermans).
Soehner said the team accomplished everything it
wanted to this season except win the Hardy Cup.
The Mohawks were knocked out of the Hardy Cup
playdowns by the Durham Huskies in the first
round.
"The Hardy Cup will always be in the back of our
minds but this is special. This is what we have been
striving for all year," said Soehner.
Mohawk defenceman Barry Baynham has been try-
ing for a provincial championship a lot longer than
most players.
"I have been working on this for three or four
years now. It was a tough series but things worked
out well for us. We were up for it and I think we
wanted it more than they did," said Baynham.
Baynham said the difference in the series was good
goaltending they received form Rick Pikul and Bill
Dark and the Mohawks ability to capitalize on their
opportunities early in the games.
"We got the hot goaltending all through the pay-
offs and built early leads, especially in this series. It
a lot easier to play when you get an early lead on a
team, but you never know what to expect," said
Baynham.
The provincial championship was the third in a
row for Dark who played with the Mooretown Com-
ets, which won the previous two all -Ontario Senior
B titles.
The Mohawks owe much of their success in the
playoffs to Pikul, who played very good during the
post season, but specifically in the league finals
against the Creemore Chiefs. Pikul had Creemore
shooters flustered throughout the five games that se-
ries lasted. Pikul said he 'was just doing his job.
"It is tough to get- in this position but I just tried
to bear down in the big games and try to help the

team as best I can. The guys went out and scored
some big goals but I was just doing my part. It feels
pretty damn good though," said Pikul.
Brian McCabe, president and assistant coach of the
LumberKings said he was surprised the series went
in four -straight games but said the two-week layoff
Dresden had prior to the series probably had a big
part to do with it.
"Because of a mixup with the OHA we had two
weeks off after we beat Wallaceburg because we
thought we had to have our series done but we found
out that these guys (Exeter), were still playing Cree-
more. I don't want to take anything away from
them, they played a great series and are deserving
champions," said McCabe. Dresden eliminated Wal-
laceburg four games to one to reach the provincial
finals.
He added he was very impressed with the way the
Mohawks all played their positions and very rarely
gave the puck up making the most of their opportu-
nities.
Dave Randerson led the way in the clinching win
Sunday night with a hat trick, and one assist, while
Gord Brooks chipped in with a pair of goals and sin-
gles went to Ron Elliot, Jeff Shipley, Wayne Urb-
shott, Sochner and Joe Scherer.
Jeff McClanaghan contributed five assists, Scher-
er, Jeff Warren, Bill Glover and Soehner each had
one.
The Mohawks outshot Dresden 36-16 in the game,
including 17-6 in the second period.
Tom McKillop, Fran Dobbelaar, Rob Copeland
and Brent Daugherty all scored for Dresden in the
third period.

Randerson also had the scoring touch in Friday
night's game in Dresden, when he chipped in with
another pair of goals, while linemate Paul Barton,
also had a pair of goals. Quincy Wilker, who centres
Randerson and Barton chipped in with a pair of as-
sists, before being forced to leave the game when he
was severely slashed across the ankle by a Dresden
player. The injury forced Wilker to sit out Sunday's.
Ted Kewley, Sochncr, Shipley and Brooks also
scored for the Mohawks Friday night.
Tim Adair and Sochner also had a pair off assists,
while one each went to Al Gates, Barton, John Ker -
nick and Dale Timmermans.
Dobbelaar, Copeland, Russ McFadden, and Jay
Brodie were all able to put the puck behind Dark in
the Mohawk net for Dresden. _

Wilker,_ Shipley from from Scherer and Kewley,
Randcrson unassisted, Shipley from Gates, Elliot
