Hundreds attend Exeter Ag Society's first quilt show
EXETER - The lust. quilt show
organized by the Homecraft Divi-
sion of the Exeter Agricultural So-
ciety was an unqualified success.
About 1,000 people paid admission
during the two days the show was
on at South Huron District High
School.
Refreshments - The library at SHDHS was transformed into a tea
room during the two-day Rainbow of Quilts show at SHDHS. Eliz-
abeth Kerslake (left) and Susan McAllister were behind the
counter when Jean Copeland and Ethel Copeland stopped by for
a snack.
"Exuberant" was how Quilt
Committee chairperson Dolores
Shapton described her feelings after
being told repeatedly throughout
the weekend that "I've been to a lot
of quilt shows, and this is the best
I've ever seen". -
Directors and members of the Ex-
eter Fair Board spent six hours on
Friday night arranging the display
of 150 beautiful quilts in the large
gym at SHDHS. They rolled up
their sleeves again after the show
closed at five Sunday night, and
had the gym cleared and ready for a
basketball game by 7:15.
Bruce slept in the school on Fri-
day and Saturday nights to make
sure nothing happened to the price-
less, irreplaceable exhibits.
Each corner of the gym, and the
stage, featured some special attrac-
tion such as a heritage display, a
quilting demonstration, and a con-
tinuous video.
The library became a temporary
tearoom, and the wide hall was
turned into a merchants' mall.
Theconveners received many
compliments on the rainbow pat-
tern designed by Linda Johns for the
bibs of the aprons they wore. The
ladies also wore rainbow earrings
purchased from a local retailer.
The Quilt Committee is meeting
this week to evaluate the quilt
show. Dolores Shapton is almost
certain there will be a second annual
Rainbow of Quilts show next year.
Those attending voted for the
quilts they liked most. The Chry-
salis quilt made by Mary Finkbein-
er, London, won first place in
"People's Choice". Hensall resident
Mary Kinsman's "Painted Daisies"
was second, and the "Star" quilt
loaned by Anne Cann, Grand Bend
was third.
Draw winners were: tied comfort-
