If you want a first hand definition of the word "exhaustion
just ask any member of the Optimist Club. They're just
coming off three days of intense work after presenting
what has been described as their best ever Home and Gar-
den Show.
The Optimists, who turn their profits back into the community,
will be making the local Scouts happy with a major donation to-
ward their expenses in attending the World Jamboree in Prince Ed-
ward Island
Pat Knight of Star Time Video echoed the words of many exhibi-
tors when he rated the local event better than similar shows in much
larger centres. Undoubtedly work has already started on the club's
fifth annual show.

Bruce Shaw will be the new manager of the Exeter SAAN Store.
Shaw begins his duties May 1 and has been assured he will not be
transferred or replaced until after May 6 when the regular manager,
Peter Antaya, will resume his duties.
If Shaw works hard and uses his winning smile to increase retail
sales, who knows what effect this week will have onhis career. Ac-
tually, he is an honorary store manager as part ofa week-long pro-
motion by the Exeter Lions and the SAAN organization to raise
money for the new Youth Centre. During the week of May 1 to
May 6 SAAN will donate 10. percent of their sales to the Lions
Club.

.Things are happening in Zurich. The Erb brothers are starting a
new career with the opening this week of Erb's Country Kitchen. It
also won't be long until the Zurich Mennonite Church holds their
grand Opening. It's slated for June 18.

If your bills are piling up read on.
In reply to your request for payment, I wish to...
Dear Sir.
In reply to your request for payment, I wish to inform you that
the present condition .of my bank account makes it almost impossi-
ble. My shattered financial condition is due to federal laws, provin-
cial laws, county laws, village laws, brother -in-laws, sister -in-laws,
and out -laws. -
Through these laws I am compelled to pay income tax, property
tax, business tax, amusement tax, head tax, cosmetic tax, tobacco
tax, alcohol tax, gas tax, inheritance tax, food tax, light tax, excise
tax, car tax, garbage tax, water tax, sewer tax, telephone tax, sales
tax, transportation tax and hidden tax.
I am required to get a business license, car license, operator's li-
cense, truck license, snowmobile license, trailer license, bicycle li-
cense, hunting license, fishing license; not to mention a marriage li-
cense and a dog license. -
I am also required to contribute to every charity, society and or-
ganization which the genius man is capable of bringing to life; to
the hospital expansion, to minor hockey, to figure skating, to sen-
ior hockey, to the curling fund, to the United Fund, to the Centenni-
al Fund, to the Red Cross, the White Cross, the Blue Cross, the
Purple Cross and the Double Cross, etc.
For my own safety I am required to carry life insurance, health in-
surance; accident insurance, fire insurance, property insurance, liabil-
ity insurance, earthquake insurance, tornado insurance, old age insu-
rance and unemployment insurance.
My business is so governed that it is no easy matter to find out
who owns it. I am inspected, expected, suspected, disrespected, re-
jected, dejected, examined, re-examined, informed, required, sum-
moned, fined, commanded and compelled, until I provide an inex-
haustible supply of money, for every known need, desire or hope of
the human race.
Simply because I refuse to donate to something or other I am •
boycotted, talked about, lied about, help up, held down, and robbed
until I am almost ruined.
I can tell you honestly that, except for a miracle that happened, I
could not enclose this cheque for payment. The wolf that comes to
my door nowadays just had pups in my kitchen. I sold the pups and
here is the money.

Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?)

Erb's Country Kitchen opens in Zurich
By Adrian Harte
ZURICH - It isn't every day a
new restaurant opens in Zurich.
Erb's Country Kitchen opened
quietly on Monday with little fan-
fare, but its owners are aware of the
significance of the event.
When construction began on Jan-
uary 14 to build the 75 -seat restau-
rant, it meant the closing of one of -
Zurich's landmarks, Erb Brothers
Garage. While many might consid-
er the leap from repairing cars to
preparing food large, Phil Erb,
brother Chuck and his wife Tanya
all agree it was a necessary change.
"The day of the small garage is
gone," said Tanya. Chuck agreed,
noting that after being in the garage
business 21 years, he' has seen the
sophistication and electronics in
cars increase to the point where
most servicing is solely in the
reahn elf the dealer's service bays.
The Sunoco gas bar will remain
open beside the restaurant, remain-
ing in the hands of Tanya's father
Jim Parkins for the moment, but he
too eventually plans to join the re-
staurant operation.
Financial considerations aside,
running an eating establishment is
something the Erbs have wanted to
do for some time now, and Zurich
MaSslve project • Plant manager Joe Rider stands beside the $1.2
million replacement building under construction at Nabisco
Brands in Exeter. The new larger building replaces the old "corn
building" originally constructed before 1920. The new facility
will continue to house existing equipment, but will offer workers
a little more room in which to move.

Customer Appreciation Day

Join us for refreshments and say farewell to Donna
Webster who is retiring after 25 years of service.

presented itself as an ideal location
for it.
"We think, for a town this size -
we're pretty near 1,000 people now
- this is something we need," said
Chuck.
"It feels good," agreed Tanya,
who used to do the bookkeeping for
the garage business but is now in
the kitchen, cooking and baking
alongside her husband and brother-
in-law.
The menu won't be too exotic.
"Just good old fashioned home
cooking," confirms Tanya. But
there will be dishes for breakfast,
lunch and dinner.
"For years people have asked at
the gas pumps "Is there no place in
town to buy breakfast'?" explained
Phil, adding that the new operation
aims to fill that gap.
. The Erbs hope another drawing
card for every meal will be the se-
lectiorl of home -baked goods made
on the premises.
In order cater to the urges of the
morning and afternoon coffee
crowd, a selection of Tasty -Nu do-
nuts will be on hand as well as
take-out coffee.
A liquor license is in the works,
and when combined with an l 1p.m.
closing time, the ,Erbs expect to
win some customers after baseball
and hockey games.
The decor of the restaurant is de-
scribed by Phil as a "happy medi-
um", aiming to allow working peo-
ple to feel comfortable at
lunchtime, while still looking cosy
to families out for an evening meal.
With the owners all in the kitch-
en, waitresses have been hired to
keep track of the customers, but as .
Tanya points out, the staff will be
kept small to start. Waiters and
waitresses can be added as business
warrants.
Judging by initial response, Tan-
ya thinks business will be excel-
lent. Last week, before the Coun-
try Kitchen opened, they were
already fully booked for Mother's
Day.

phenomenal.
The only fly in•the ointment is
the cleanup. Why do parents al-
ways have to spoil the fun by in-
sisting that everything is put
away neatly in the end? "I wasn't
using these, why shot. 'd I have
to put them away?" "It'.: not fair,
I didn't even wear these hats, and
I'm supposed to pick them up".
But eventually everything gets
stuffed into the right .drawers.
Frankly, I don't care whether my
silk scarf is neatly folded or not.
I hay uin it once since it was
given to me 12 years ago, and I -
may never wear it again. But it
has provided many hottrs.a.t>_
and entertainment during dressup
time. Elizabeth is more particular
about her stuff.
There is only one dressup act
that bothers me: when Stephanie
(who is seven and a half) prances
around wearing lipstick, rouge,
sunglasses, miniskirt and high -
heeled shoes. She reminds me of
a novel I read long ago, called
Lolite (by Vladimir Nabokov)
about a bubblegum -chewing brat
seducing and being in tum se-
duced by a dirty old man. I
would much rather see her as a
little girl for quite a number of
years, thank you.
But on the whole, dressup
time is fun for everybody. It
doesn't cost anything, and I can't
think of any negative side-
effects. Unless you consider Sat-
urday moming TV commercials
aimed at kids an essential part of
our educational, social and eco-
nomic structure.
