Hawks president
presents thoughts
on 1988-89 season
By George Pratt, presi-
dent of the Jr. D Hawks
LUCAN - Friday night, March
31, 1989 at the Lucan Arena, the
1988-89 season of the Exeter Jr.
Hawks came to an exciting and
"sudden" finale.. The ending was,
shall we say "bittersweet".
In all my time in organized
hockey, I can't remember a more
thrilling game - we were one shot
away from winning, but it wasn't
to be. But there was no feeling of
bitter despair and defeat.
We gave everything we had to a
very good hockey team and came
up one goal short.
I have never in my life been so
proud of a group of young hockey
players as I was that night. I
know I am not alone in that feel-
ing. Anyone who witnessed that
game, came away knowing they
had just seen one of the finest ex-
amples of heart ever displayed on
an ice rink.
Even in defeat we came away
winners - there are no heads hang-
ing down by our players, fans,
sponsors, executive or anyone as-
sociated with this team. •
A number of months ago I
wrote an article in this paper stat-
ing that we were rebuilding this..
year, but that we would give it
everything we had. Now that it is
over, we can `certainly say we did
everything we set out to do and
more.
It now comes to a time as in
any other year where we have nu-
merous people to say a very spe-
cial THANK YOU to, for giving
their support to the Jr. Hawks in
one way or another during our
very successful season.
First and foremost, we wish to
thank our fans who carne out in
large numbers and who very defi-
nitely, gave a great boost to the
play of our boys.
Next we thank all our sponsors,
those who paid for advertising in
our program, those who paid for
ice time during our seven home
games in the playoffs.
Next to the Exeter Legion
Branch 167 who made a very
generous donation of $1,000 to us
as well as a free night's use of the
hall. Also a thank you to the Le-
gion for allowing the Hawk Exec-
utive the use of your facilities for
our frequent meetings,throughout
the season. Your support, gene-
rosity and interest is most appre-
c iated.
1 wish to thank Ken Ogden
with Charterways for all his sup-
port of the Jr. Hawks this year.
He kindly waived the charge for
our bus going to Lucan on that
night of our final game.
I wish to thank all our execu-
tive who worked so hard all year
to keep this club going.
A very special thanks to Nancy
Quirm, our secretary without
whom I could not have gotten
through this season.
A very special thank you to my
wifc Helen who has been without
me during most of the season but
who never gave up on me. A
very special thanks to our Coach,
Jack Nairn who did it all this
year; and to Al Quinn, our Gener-
al Manager and P.A. announcer!
A superb job on both of those du-
ties.
To our assistant coaches Cam
Stewardson and Dave Attllill.
Dave coached our final game .in
Jack's absence ( he was in Las Ve-
gas) and did an absolutely splendid
job. A big thanks to Andy McIn-
tyre our trainer who was there
whenever possible to patch up in-
jured players and keep moral up as
well!
Thanks to our head time keeper
Alex Osgood who was always
there doing a good job.
A big thank you to our many
helpers at our home games who
worked at the gates and did many
other duties that needed to be done.
Also a thank you to the players
and management of the Lucan Irish
Hockey Club for yourwords of
praise for the Exeter Hawks. We
wish you Good Luck as you go af-
ter the Ontario Championship.
To those of you who I have in-
advertently not given thanks to
please accept my apologies.
Although our on -ice season is
now over, there are a few more
things left'to do to officially com-
plete our season.
Firstly, on Friday, April 28,
1989, we will be holding our
Hawk Awards Banquet at the Exet-
er Legion. Individual player
awards will be presented after in-
dulging ourselves with a roast -beef
dinner and followed by partying
and dancing till the wee hours.
We welcome anyone interested in
attending this very special even-
ing.
econdly, on May 26, also a
Friday, we will be holding our sec-
ond Annual Fish Fry at the Exeter
Legion. We found it to be very
popular last year, and hope this
year will be even better. We are
planning on serving perch and
pickerel and "ALL YOU CAN
EAT" as well. Start planning on
this event early.
Thirdly, our Annual Meeting
will take place in the first week of
June. This meeting gives all de-
tails of the preceding year and also
is the first step for the beginning
of the upcoming 1989-90 Jr.
Hawk season.
All those interested in being part
of this super hockey should make
an effort to be out to that meeting.
There is one more group to give
a Thanks to and I've kept it to the
end of all this for a reason. I've al-
ways felt that saving the best for
the last works! To all the young
men who played on this team this
year, thank you from the bottom
of my heart for showing us all the
true meaning of hard work, com-
mitment and dedication. I know I
speak for everyone involved with
you guys from the try -outs last
August to the final "TRIUMPH"
on March 31. You made believers
out of all of us.
We had a great season, we had
fun, and we all grew up a whole
lot.
See you all at the Banquet and if
possible, we arc looking for even
better things next season. Just
like Bob Hope always says,
Thank you so much.
George Pratt
on behalf of the
Exeter Jr. Hawks.
