Petites claim Western CHATHAM - The Exeter Petite (Hawkette) Rin- gette team claimed the Bronze medal in The Western Region Finals, Sunday` in Chatham. Teams from Forest, Kitchener, London, Goderich, Walkerton. Guelph, Dorchester. Mitchell, Seaforth, St. Thomas and Lambeth were also playing for the Western On- tario title. The locals won three straight games in their pool to advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-final game, Exeter fought with a lot of heart and determi- nation, but came up short by one in both games. In game one, Exeter met up against Kitchener and won 8-4.Both teams started out very even scoring two each. Cara Gardner chalked up both goals for Exeter in the first. Exeter pulled away in the second .with Danielle Miners and Gardner each getting three. Assists went to Miners with four; Teresa Stire three; Jo -Dec Rowe and Gardner two each. Kitchener only man- aged to get two behind Exeter's Jana Webster, de- spite numerous chances. - London fell victim to Exeter's winning ways Sat- urday in the locals second game. The 4-2 win was a very tight game with excellent goaltending for Web- ster and London's Susan Foster, • Exeter's goals all came in the first half, two from Gardner and one each from Amy Edwards and Sonya Lawrence. Miners helped on• two .scoring plays while Cheryl Wein and Stire each assisted on one. Exeter dominated the third game winning 13-0 over Lambeth. Webster chalked up the shut -out. Miners slammed in three during the first half Gardner two and Judi Wilson managed one. Assists went to Heather Davies, Stire, Wein, Gardner and Miners. Lawrence matched Miners three in the second while, Stire, Davies, Rowe and Leeann Foster each fired one in. Only Wilson and Gardner added as- sists. With the three wins. Exeter was assured of at least a bronze as they continued. With only one win in the semi-final games, the local would advance to the silver and gold final. Region bronze medal In the first game of the semi-finals Exeter met an undefeated Walkerton team at 7 a.m. Walkerton started the scoring but after 10 minutes of play, Exeter's Gardner began putting the ring in and by the end of the first Exeter was ahead by two. Davies scored at 14:11 of the second, but Walker- ton replied quickly with two. Another Gardner goal helped retain the two goal lead for Exeter. After many attempts, Walkerton again managed two but an Exeter goal from Miners put the locals on top with 3:07 remaining, With 1:10 remaining, Walkerton tied the game to force a five-minute over- time period. Walkerton managed the first goal, 10 seconds into the extra period, but Exeter fought back and Gardner penetrated with 2:30 remaining. Walkerton took advantage of a 49 second power play and scored with only 14 seconds left on the clock, to claim the win. Exeter assists came from Miners with three, Wein and Lawrence each had two and Edwards chipped in with one. Exeter met Dorchester in another morning match. Goaltending was superb by both teams, but Exeter's Webster shone, the brightest saving shot after shot. The first goal came 14 seconds into the game, from Gardner with Foster assisting, but just nine seconds later Dorchester got one back. The score re- mained tied, for what "seemed like eternity, despite many shots. t It took until the 3:40 mark of the second for Dor- chester to get one past Webster, but Exeter's Law- rence and Rowe wasted no time setting up Gardner only 12 seconds later. With 1;02 remaining Dorchester scored what turned out to be the winning goal, edging Exeter 3 - Exeter played outstanding offense and defense to come this close to both Walkerton and Dorchester. This is the first Western Region Medal for the Exeter Ringette Association. CONGRADS GIRLS!!! Mini Hawks season ends BLYTH - Exeter Mini Hawks season ended on the weekend with a pair of close matches against Bel - grave. The first game Mini Hawks took the lead in the first on a goal by Andy Glavin from Billy Connor. With 20 seconds left in the sec- ond, Belgrave tied the game on a hand pass which deflected off a Mini Hawk skate. The third was back -and -forth CO.OP `e-oriie- and see our Bath and Pumbing Centre hockey but once again Mini Hawks got stung on a pass in front form - the comer where it deflected off a Mini Hawks back into the net. The second game Mini Hawks took the lead again on a goal by Pres Lavier, but found themselves behind 3-1 at the end of the first. Mini Hawks got one back early in the third but couldn't get the equalizer as they hit 12 goal post in the last two minutes of play. Novice Ringette team EXETER - On Saturday, March 25 Exeter Novice Ringette hosted their parents, and brothers and sis- ters in Hensall. They are not sure of the final score but the timekeepers were on the girls side. They think it was. a 9-9 tie. However, some of the fathers were entertaining everyone, as they carried the ring over the blue line and went into the goal crease and scored. Of course, the goal didn't taunt! Tracy Wilson tripped her Dad George and Leroy Edwards helped and _then everyone was on top of Leroy and George! Referees were Cathie and Judi Wilson. Judi ended up in the penal- ty box, with help from Leroy Ed- wards. He got two penalties total. Jody Hamilton got two penalties then she helped referee near the end of the game as Cathie helped keep time. Jody also ended up in the penalty box where she was referee. Thanks to Leroy again. Deb Law- Tweens in Regionals GLENCOE - The Exeter Tween Ringette played in the Western Re- gional Playdowns in Glencoe on the weekend and lost two games and won once. They also played the Op- timists in an exhibition gam© last Tuesday night and lost 9-6. In the Western Regionals, Exeter lost 10-4 to Chatham Friday night, lost 4-3 to Woolwich Saturday morning and beat Kitchener 7-3 Sat- urday night: Against Chatham, Exeter couldn't recover from the 7-2 hole they had dug for themselves at halftime and Chatham cruised to the win. Scoring for the Exeter were; Mi- chelle Bowerman from Andrea Urlin and Lisa Forrest, Jill Sararas unas- sisted, Christie Morgan from Sara- ras and Cathie Wilson and Christie Bedard from Wilson and Bowerman. Jennifer Francis and Jolene Keith each had a pair to lead Chatham on to victory. Woolwich 4 Exeter 3 In this game, Exeter was behind 3-1 at the half but scored twice in the second half to come to within one goal but couldn't get the one they needed to tic. Sararas had Exeter's first-half goal from Christine Morgan and in the second half, Bedard scored from Bowerman and Suzanne Steciuk and Sararas picked up her second from Cheyenne Westlake. Katie Armstrong played a strong game ingoal for Exeter to keep it close. Against Kitchener, the Tweens scored six times in the second half, while holding the opposition to three total. Sararas kept up her hot scoring in the game with three goals, Bedard and Westlake each had a pair. Sara- ras also had two assists and one each went to Bowerman, Morgan, goaltender Armstrong, Urlin and Jody -Lynn Hamilton. Avril Lavallcc had two goals for Kitchener and Scssha Rabidcau had a goal and two assists. Lisa Forrest was timekeeper for the first while, then Cheryl Ballan- tyne, and Cathie Wilson and Jody Hamikon took turns. Melissa Hayter was Novice's Goalie, and did a good jc.b and Le- roy Edwards for awhile.- George Wilson was the parents goalie for a awhile and Jody Hamilton and Jim Regier. They were "tricky". Larry Hamilton switched to the girls team in the second period. Le- roy Edward switched back and forth. John Hayter got two penalties, but wouldn't skate over to the penalty box. He kept right on playing! He thought the referees should have had the penalties. Everyone was on the ice in the last three minutes ! "Poor refs!" Playing for the parents team were Deb Lawrence, John .Hayter, Jim Regier, Cheryl Ballantyne, Larry Hamilton, Jody and Bobby Hamil- ton, Trevor Truemner and George Wilson, and Amy Edwards. Playing on the girls team were Leroy Edwards, Melissa Hayter, Theresa Wilhelm, Alicia Lawrence, Kclli Regier, Jayne Ballantyne, .Sa- rah Hamilton, Jodi Truemner, and Tracy Wilson, Lisa Forrest, and Larry Hamilton for awhile.
