Mohawks take league laurels
CREEMORE - The Exeter Mo-
hawks wrapped up their Central
Ontario. Senior B Hockey League
title in five games after literally
surviving a fight against the Cree-1
more Chief .
The MohWks then started their
best -of -seven provincial finals
against the Dresden LumberKings
Sunday night in Dresden and came
away 6-3 winners.
The fifth game in the the best -of -
seven league finals last Wednesday
night at Creemore was a wild -and -
wooly affair with just about every-
thing thrown in.
The Chiefs tried to intimidate the
Mohawks right from the outset but
referee Garry Kippfer laid down the
law sending a message he wasn't
going to put up with any dirty
play.
• With 4:45 left in the first period,
Kippfer called Crcemore's John
Matthews for a cross checking pen-
alty. Coach John Lunn protested
the call so he was given a.penalty.
The enraged coach tried to go
over the¶oards to get at Kippfer
and had to be restrained by. some of
his players but he wasn't finished
yet. Kippfer promptly tossed Lunn
out of the game and Lunn respond-
ed by tossing all of the team's extra
sticks onto the ice, grabbed the
• benches and threw them onto
the ice and also hurled all the water
bottles and towels onto the ice. As
a result the Mohawks had a two-
man advantage for about seven
minutes which they failed to capi-
talize on. -
With 3:14 left in the second peri-
od, Mohawk goalie Rick Pikul was
run heavily into the boards behind
his net by Gerry Reinders. He was
down for about seven minutes be-
fore he moved at all. Several Mo-
hawk players took exception to the
move by . Reinders and a near
bench -clearing brawl ensued be-
cause Exeter did not have a back-up
goalie for the game as Bill Dark did
not make the trip.
To help Pikul clear his head and
restore order, Kippfer had both
teams go to the dressing room and
the 3:14 that was left in the second
wal completed before the third peri-
od. Several more fights occurred 41
the third.
"It was pretty sad," said Mohawk
coach Bob Rowe, commenting on
the behavior of Lunn.
"We kept our cool when we had
to and played good disciplined hock-
ey, which is more than I can say for
them," Rowe said, He added he had
never seen a display of such poor
sportsmanship like that before.
Mohawk defenseman Jeff
McClenaghan echoed his coaches
comments on Lunn's behavior and
• said he knew the game was going
to be a rough one going in.
"These guys, (Creemore), get a -
little goony at times and we expect
that and its hard to play a team that
has no coach. It . really showed "a
lack of discipline on their part to go
at our goalie the way they did, but
when you play a team like that you
have to keep your cool and just •
pick your spots when you want to
go alter them," said McClenaghan.
Winning. the league does not
make up for losing the Hardy Cup
according to McClenaghan.
"The Hardy Cup is entirely differ-
ent.
ifferent. In that you are fighting for a
Canadian championship, while it's
nice to win the league it is not
quite the same," he said.
Creemore advanced to the league
finals by beating the Durham Hu-
skies in seven games, the same
Durham Huskies that defeated the
Mohawks in the opening. round of
the Hardy Cup. -
When asked if he would have pre-
ferred to play Durham over Cree-
more in the league final to get
c. some re5enge, McClenaghan re-
sponded," I would have liked to
play Durham because they stick to
playing hockey and don't fight as
much as Creemore.
Creemore got off to a flying start
last Wednesday night, when Scott
Jackson went coast-to-coast and
- scored an unassisted goal just 24
seconds into the game.
But the Mohawks responded just
1:21 later to tie the game and scored
three more time in the first and
. took a 4-1 lead after one period and
were never headed.
Captain Mark Soehncr scored the
first two goals for the Mohawks,
one from Quincy Wilker and Ron
Elliot and the other from Tim Adair
and Barry Baynham. Dave Rander-
son also scored from Adair and Elli-
ot and Wilker scored Randerson and
Barton in the first period.

Irish oust
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish have
advanced to the Western Junior D
North Division final against the Ta-
vistock Braves after knocking off
the Exeter Hawks 5-4 in double
overtime in an exciting Seventh -
and -deciding gam; of their division
semi-finals.
The Irish trailed 3-1 after four
games of the series but came back
to win last Monday night at the Lu -
can Arena 6=3, won last Wednesday
night at the South Huron Ree Cen-
tre 8-6 and Friday night's dramatic
victory to take the series.
The Hawks were ...without coach
Jack Nairn who had made a previ-
ous
ous commitment to go out of town
that weekend and coaching duties
were shared by Cam Stewardson and
Dave Atthill.
"We gave it everything we had,"
said Atthill.
"We certainly have nothing to
hang our heads about because we
e weren't expected to go this far".
Atthill said fatigue did not play a
factor for the Hawks because he felt
the- Irish should have been just as
tired as Exeter. But it was the sec-
ond -straight Seven=game,series for
the Hawks, who were forced to go
the distance in the opening round
against the Thedford Lumberjacks
before finally taking that series. The
Irish beat the Mitchell Hawks in six
-games. •
. Also, the Hawks had three players
dressed for the game, Doug Clarke,
Joel Campbell and Dan Nairn, but
all three saw very little if any .ice
time in the game. They also went
with only four defenceman, because
of the injury to David Dalrymple,
who didn't dress.
Lucan coach Dave Revington. said
his team showed a -lot of character
coming back the way they did.
"It -was a tough series for anybody
to lose going as long as -it did, but
it really showed some character
building on our part out there," said
Revington.
Revington said the turning point
in Friday's game was when the Irish
came back to make it 3-2 shortly af-
ter the 1-lawks took a 3-1 lead in the
second period, because Revington
felt if the Hawks could have taken a
4-1 lead they might have been im-
• possible to catch. He also felt hav-
ing a longer bench than Exeter made-
• big difference in the outcome of the
series.'
In the first 10 -minute overtime,
both teams had several good chances
to score "and both goalies, Exeter's
Todd Campbell and Lucan's -Brad
Judd came up very _big.
Withless than five minutes to
play in the first overtime, the puck
came sliding out towards the faceoff
circle to the left of Campbell, he
gambled and came racing out of the
net to clear it away before an on-
coming Lucan player could get to
it, missed the puck and it was taken
by Lucan's Glen Marshall who had
the wide-open net to score in.

force the second extra session.
Three minutes into the second
overtime, Lucan's Rick Weishar had
two or three `swipcs,at the puck in
front of the net, Campbell had trou-
ble corralling the puck and he fell
back across the goal line, despite
having the puck still in front of
him. Some said. the puck never did
cross the line but referee Rick Sin-
gleton said it did and that was all
that mattered.
Barnes opened the scoring at 7:53
of the first, from Darren Neil and
Dean Doerr. Three minutes . later,
the Hawks got‘even when Derek
Shackleton stole a puck at his blue-
line, while shorthanded; skated in
alone on Judd and scored. •
The Hawks took a 2-1 lead at
14:37 of the first when Jim Dickins
scored from Jean Paul Cousineau
and Shackleton. .
The Hawks took a 3-1 lead 13:34
of the second when Shackleton got
his second from a slap shot from
his blueline, after having just killed
off a penalty. Bryan Quinn and
Cousineau drew assists.
But the Irish got that back just
under,a minute later when Bill Pat-
ten scored from Jeff Hirtzell and
Marshall. -
Barnes second goal at 8:34 of the
third tied the game and forced over-
time.
Marshall's goal at 5:31 of the first
overtime was assisted by Febrey and
Dean Schram and gave the Irish a
brief 4-3 lead but Larry Lewis' goal
just 23 seconds later, from : Mark
Morrissey and Steve Dubarry forced
a second overtime.
Welshes game winner at 3:09 of
the second overtime was set up by
Todd Hayter.
The Irish outlasted the Hawks 8-.
6 at the South Huron Rec Centre
last Wednesday night to force a sev-
s ..
enth-and-deciding game at the Lucan .
Arena.
The Hawks led 3-1 after one peri-
od last Wednesday but fell pan in
the second once again as the Irish
tallied five times en route to their
win. ,
Neil got the- Irish on the board ..
first with his goal at 9:32 of the
first, from Barnes and Marshall.
The Hawks got on the board at
• 13:04 when Shackleton got his first
of two from Cousineau and his sec-
ond came exactly three minutes lat-
er, from Cousineatt;and- Dickins, to
put the Hawks in the lead. The
Hawks went up 3-1 before the -peri-
od was over when .Dickins scored
:from Shackleton andCpusineau. -
But the Irish onslaught in the sec-
ond period started just, 22 -seconds .
into the period and continued until
17:45.
• Barnes scored from Marshall and
Neil, Jeff. Hirtzell scored from Bill
Patten, Rick Weishar scored unas- -
sisted, Jon Mc-Eachenn scored from
Brad Muir and Doerr and Weishar
scored another. unassisted. .
Scoring for the hawks in flit
third frame were; Cousincau froi,i
Dan. Nairn and Shackleton, line
wis from Anscms and N1orrissc'
and. Jim Lewis from Duharry and
Ansems. - .
McEachern had a pair for the Irish
in•the.third. period to complete hili
hat trick, one. from Denomy and th4
other assist went to Barnes. -
The Hawks outshot the Irish 40-
29 in the game but Lucan nctmind-
er Brad Judd played very steady.
The Irish will meet the Tavistock.
Braves in the Division finals al-
