Open house for Zurich scientists
ZURICH - Grade seven and eight
students at Zurich Public School,
like other students in the area, have
been testing the limits of their in-
genuity while working on science
fair projects.
John Soer and Joel Siebert are
the two representatives from Zurich
who will be taking their projects to
the county finals in Clinton later
this month. Their projects were
selected to represent the school be-
cause of their interest, soundness of
their scientific method, and their
overall presentation.
To test the relative strength of
different bridge designs, Soer built
10 model bridges out of spaghetti
and measured the deflection of each
-under load.
His conclusion? Soer determined
the "whipple style bridge" is
strongest of all.
When asked how long it took
him to build all 10 bridges, he
laughed and said "too long".
Siebert's project follows in a
similar vein. He set out to test the
bonding ability of various types of
glues when used on wood. Calling
his project "All stuck up" he glued
four types of wood with four types
of glue and used a crank to measure
the breaking points.
Siebert says the idea for testing
glues came from industrial arts
class and he estimates it took a full
24 hours of work to reach his con-
clusions.
An honorable mention went to
Michael Thiel who froze and heated
tiles of cement to simulate the
breakup of Ontario roads and to see
if any materials could be used to
help preserve them.
Parents were treated to a display
of all the students' projects last
Wednesday evening when the
school combined the finalists' se-
lection process with an open
house.
