Marian Doucette of Clinton was one of the 15 winners of Ontario's fourth annual Out- standing Achievement Awards for excellence in voluntarism jointly announced by the Honourable Ger- ry Phillips, Minister of Citizen- ship, and the Honourable Lily Od- die Munro, Minister of Culture and Communications. The awards are presented in three categories - individual, non-profit organization and business. They recognize the achievements of those who have made exceptional contributions to community volun- tarism in areas related to citizen- ship and culture such as the arts, li- braries, heritage conservation, multiculturalism, race relations and native community development. "My ministry is honoured to co- sponsor these awards which recog- nize the considerable time, effort and energy that countless Ontario volunteers give tirelessly to the people of the province every day of the year," said Phillips. "This year's 15 award winners exemplify the rich rewards that are gained through voluntarism both by the community and by volun- teers themselves,", said Dr. Oddie Munro. Marian Doucette has served on the board of directors of the Blyth Festival since 1980, often spending 40 hours a week in this volunteer capacity while also holding down a full-time job. The fact Mrs. Doucette has just completed three years as presidtnt (when the regular term of office is two) is an indication of just how dedicated and committed a volunteer this person is - particularly since. the festival embarked on a"major $1.8: million capital expansion pro- ject during her second year in this office. Her -considerable knowledge of all aspects of the Blyth Centre for the Arts - from box-office opera- tions to the technical department to artistic vision - has resulted.in her being asked to represent the organi- zation at arts conferences both at home and abroad where she has re- ceived many accolades for her breadth of knowledge and enthu- siasm. "She :is'much renowned by our• board and company alike," said the Three Centuries Festival in nomi- nating Mrs. Doucette for an award, "and (we) believe herexample can do much (to teach) us all about the true spirit of voluntarism." Lisa Clark and Heath Palen Gr. 3 March Thoughts In March on the first day it usu- ally feels like the wind comes in like.a lion. I like to think of all. the things we have in March. First comes St. Patrick's Day which is when we wear green. Sec- ond comes our March break from school for a whole week. My cou- sin Amanda is coming over to my house. . - Last of all comes Easter, my -fa- vourite day. I think that if you get a lot of chocolate, put some away. Too much chocolate is bad for you to eat. There are two Easter holi- days. Easter Sunday is on the Twenty-sixth. The other Easter Monday on March twenty-seventh. On the last day of March it feels like the wind is going out like a lamb. Shannon Sweiger Gr. 3 As I was thinking about March, things just popped into my head. I was supposed tobe thinking about Math but I couldn't getthem out of my head: swimming, skiing, Flor- ida, Mexico, Porta Plato. Oh how I wish I could go to one of those places, or do one of those things. I might be able to go this year. Jamie Hoffman Gr. 4 Report Cards We received our report cards on Monday, March 6. We get them. to tell our parents how well we are do- ing in school. I usually have a good report. I -doubt that I will fail any grade. At least I haven't yet. While I wait for my. report card I feel nervous. I feel happy when I look at it. - ' Melissa Marshall Gr. 3 For otlr Weather Charting we have special sheets of paper. We have the names of things to look for and record on the sheet. We are doing Wind Direction, Cloud types Barometric Pressure and others. It '► seemed very easy. VWe used the weather column in the London Free Press and we watch or listen to the weather forecasts for the day ahead. We can look at temperatures in oth- er provinces and other countries to compare them to our weather in this part of Ontario. Australia's temperature at Sydney was 23 C to- • day. Jeremy Brand Gr. 4 Jeff's Mom's Visit She came .to your school to talk to us about John• Deere. She showed us some John Deere tractor and plowers and all sorts of stuff.
