.
I have been to enough hockey games over the years that I thinkI
would make a fainly decent referee, if I. could only skate.
-1 have.seen some good referees and I have seen some bad ones,
very bad ones, but none quite like the one I- saw last Wednesday
night at the Lucan Arena officiating the third game of the Western
Junior D Division semi-finals between the Exeter Hawks and the Lu -
can Irish.
t realize that the Ontario Hockey Association sends some of its
newer -officials to cover the Junior D. ranks so they can gain some
valuable experience and the coaches in -the Junior;]) league know the
same thing and there is not a lot they can do about it.
Will Norris of the OHA office in Cambridge said Monday most re-
ferees are assigned to the.gaines'depending upon how much experi-
ence they have: The ones with the mostexperience, are in high
leagues, newer ones get sent to the Junior D ranks until they can
prove themselves. - -
There is such a thing as letting the teams play hockey and avoid
calling a lot of minor infractions but when they are not calling ma-
jor or even minor stick infractions and roughing after a whistle, that
is when problems arise.
Most players and coaches would agree that if a referee is going to-
bc bad, they don't mind as long as they are consistently bad. In other
words if they are going to miss some calls, miss them for both
teams. _ -
It -gets frustrating for the players as well when the referee -allows a
minor skirmish. After a whistle, many times there may be pushing
and shoving and the referee will not call any penalties. It doesn't take
long until while the scurmishes get rougher and rougher and when
still no penalties are called the players are not sure what they can or
can't get away with. If the ref would set the tone from the outset and
call a lot of that kind of play, much of that nonsense could be avoid-"
ed. - - -
I realize both- teams were at fault in that game for using their
sticks illegally but I am sure referee Dave Whaley should share some
of the blame also. - -
It all came to a boiling point when an Exeter player was almost -
seriously hurt, but the way things were going it could have just as
easily been a Lucan player. • _
With about 10 minutes to play, Exeter was pressing for a goal
around the Lucan-net and the Hawks leading scorer during the regular
season, Derck Shackleton, was in front of Lucan goalie Brad Judd
when he fell to- the ice after -getting struck in the throat by a high
stick from Brad Muir, a Lucan player who hardly ever takesmajor
penalties. - - . _ -
Shackleton fell to the ice extremely hard and lay face down for
about 10 minutes and didn't move a muscle. I didn't know what had
happened to him and I just saw him fall and thought he tripped on
something that was thrown on the ice.
It looked very scary. at the. time. Shackleton was carried off on a
stretcher after remaining motionless on the ice.
Shackleton was taken by. ambulance to University Hospital in
London bleeding from the neck and he was having trouble breathing.
Granted, the referee can't see everything, which is one reason why I
think linesmen should be given the power to call penalties more of-
ten than they do, but for whatever reason, Whaley didn't seemuch
last Wednesday night and it was a shame that a young hockey player
with a bright future had toendure.such an injury just to get a referee
to open his eyes. . .
Ironically, he didn't even see the Shackleton incident and -wasn't
going t cu.l a , cnalty,-btit when he saw Shackleton not move for
10 minutes his conscience probably caught up with him and he
called the Lucan player for only a five-minute high sticking penalty -
after talking it over with his linesmen. Nomatchpenalty was called.
Norris, from the OHA office, said the supervisor of officials for the
Junior D league was at the game in question and has filed a report
with the league office: -
The National Hockey League is taking steps to crack down on the
high sticking incidents this year and it's about time the lower ranks
do the same. Part of the problem may also be the use of facemasks.
Sure it may protect'a player's eyes, but it makes a smaller player.
just that much tougher when he knows a larger player can't haul off
•ano slug him when all he will be hitting is a facemask, so they use
the sticks instead.
_
The high stick by Muir may have been accidental, but regardless,
-if that referee would have laid down the law from the start like he
should have, much of that high sticking nonsense could have been
avoided.
Fortunately Shackleton was not seriously hurt. He left the hospital
at 4 a.m. Thursday morning. To his credit was expected to miss only
one game, but played Friday night with a bandage on his neck and
scored a goal. The whole situation could have been much worse.
I know referees can have bad nights just like players. That is prob-
ably happened to Whaley Wednesday night, but they are ultimately
responsible for the players' safety on the ice.
Five high sticking penalties were called on both sides by Whaley
that night, including Muir's. In Friday night's game at the South
Huron Rec Centre, which Exeter won 6-2, referee Marshall Copp
called 10 high -sticking penalties, four to the Irish, including one ma-
jor, and six to Exeter, all minors. In the fifth game of the series
Monday night back in Lucan, referee Rick Singleton called the teams
for seven high -sticking infractions, all minors. i -
I just hope Whaley looked in the mirror and decided not_to accept
his pay for that night and I also hope the players cleanup the high
an
sticking before someone docs get seriously hurt and for the fans who
enjoy exciting hockey. A hockey stick was, meant to be used for
shooting pucks, not a weapon.
This column was not meant to point fingers or lay the blame on
any team or individual for what happened, just to make everyone
aware of the problem and to help make sure it doesn't happen again.
