Varna Heart and Stroke canvass

VARNA - The Varna Orange
Lodge reports that the Heart and
Stroke Foundation canvass has
been completed in this area. The
Lodge looks after the Goshen, Bab-
ylon, Parr Line and fourth with
connecting roads, excluding the vil-
lage.
This is the seventh year that the
lodge has canvassed and the $763
raised is the largest amount to date.
Committee members Charles
Reid and Ivan McClymont wish to
thank all who donated and special
thanks to the canvassers Allan
Hayter, Bill Dowson, Harry Pen-
nings, Jack Hamilton, Keith Ste-
phenson, Earl Laycox, Eric Chuter,
Barry Taylor and Doug McAsh.
Donations to the Heart and
Stroke Foundation in the village
were up nearly $30 over last year
and fifty percent higher than 1987.
The generosity of the residents is
appreciated by the canvasser, who
is Mary Chessell and the Founda-
tion's members.
Have all those canoers got their
canoes out and ready to go? It's
time again for the 4th annual Stan-
ley Township Canoe Poker Rally.
It will be held Sunday April 9
with registration from 12:30 - 1:30.
There will be prizes for the best
poker hands.

The Varna Orange Lodge Card
Party was held last Friday March 17
at Varna Complex. Ladies high
prize went to Joan Beierling and
men's high prize went to Elmer
Hayter. Norene Hayter took the
prize for the Ladies low and Al
Hoggarth the men's low.
Door prizes were won by Earl
Laycox, Joan Beierling and Gladys
Alexander. Next card party will be
March .31 at 8 p.m. at Varna Com-
plex. Everyone welcome!
Jim and Madeline Murray have
sold their house which they have
been residents in for 37 years.
Trey have bought a house in Bran-
don, Manitoba where they will be
closer to their family. -
On Sunday March 12 friends and
relatives surprised them with a fare-
well -party. 22 people in all attend -
Craig seniors meet
AILSA CRAIG -. The Happy
. Gang Seniors met at the Legion
Hall on March 15 at 1:30 p.m.
President Levi White presided with
Shirley William's Secretary and
Harold Gilfoylc as Treasurer assist-
ing.
It was reported Laura Axford was
improving but still in hospital.
The President reported having
looked into our trip to Niagara Falls
and area. It will be on May 11 with
the meal at the Beacon Inn.
Our next meeting will be March
Egg hunt,
GRAND BEND - This Saturday,
March 25, from 11 a.m. sharp to 1
p.m., the Lambton Heritage Mu-
seum will be the site -of the 'Great
Easter Egg Hunt'. The Bunt is an
annual project of the Ausable-Port
Franks Optimist Club, and has be-
come a local tradition for children

McCallum and Jessie Lewis in
charge of the Pot Luck Dinner at 12
p.m.
The balance of the afternoon was
spent playing Euchre. There was
seven tables in play and we played
1- games. The prizes were to the
following:
Ladies High - Hazel Walker, La-
dies Lone Hands - Lorraine Neil,*
Ladies Low - Syble Stephenson,
Mens High - Beckie Ross, Mens
Lone Hands - Mar'jorie Davidson
and Mens Low - George Keen.

The children will hunt for and I
colour real eggs. There will be priz-
es, games and fun for all. The event
will also include a bonnet -making
contest Judged by Optimist and
Lambton County Officials.
It is anticipated that up to 500
area children will attend the Great
Easter Egg Hunt this year. Admis-
sion is free to those under 12 years
of age. Hotdog lunches and refresh-
ments are available at noon. Come
out and have lunch with the Easter
Bunny!
The Lambton Heritage Museum
is located on Hwy. 21, five milts
south of Grand Bend, opposite the
Pinery Provincial Park.

POLICE TACTICAL UNITS INQUIRY
NOTICE
The Ontario Police Commission was directed by the
Solicitor General on January 4, 1989 to examine the use of
police tactical units in Ontario.
The Commission was asked to examine and make
recommendations on the following:
1. the historical operation and utilization of such units,
since their incepiico
2. the selection and training of the personnel
comprising such units;
3. the equipment used by such units, including
weapons and communications equipment;
4.. the functions assigned to such units; '
5. the rationale and need for such units.

related to its mandate.
Written submissions from members of the public are now
invited. They should be forwarded to the Ontario Police
Commission, 9th Floor, 25 Grosvenor Street, Toronto, M7A
2H3, by Friday, April 21, 1989.
The Commission is Currently arranging a series of public
hearings at which interested citizens and organizations will
have the opportunity to personally state their views. Those
citizens and groups who submit written briefs will have an
opportunity, if desired, to expand on their submissions at
these hearings.

ZURICH - This week, after our
opening exercises the Zurich Woo-
Iette 4H club finished our first sam-
pler, and Teamed how todo our sec-
ond sampler. This one consists of
increasing and decreasing suches.
We all watch in amazement at
how our three stitches turned to
eighteen stitches, then back to three
again. Next week, we will begin
our major knitting projects.
Refreshments were brought by
Roxanne Regier and Nicole Beau-
champ. Our president, Mary Hart-
man closed the meeting.
Our next meeting is on March 20
at the Hay Township Hall in Zu-
rich.

Monday March 13, four local
boys, Chris Taylor, Greg Keys,
Raymond Beierling and Graham
Keys playing hockey for the Hen-
sall Atoms travelled to Listowel
and took part in a tournament with
the rest of the Hensall team. They
won their first and second games
and had enough points to go for the
B Consolation and managed to
come up against a.tough Listowel
team and won the B Championship.
