More gold for Hern LONDON 7 Former Exeter figure skater Kelly Hern added a gold medal to her collection after her performance with the Burlington Fig-' urc Skating Club at the Ildcrton Winter Club's Canadian International Precision Skating Competition Saturday evening, at Thompson Arena. Hern skated with the Exeter Figure Skating Club for five years, so when she went away to McMaster University this year she tried out for the Burlington team, Ice Image. - Saturday's competition pitted Burlington against teams from London, Delhi, Sudbury, Aylmcrffillsonburg, Niagara Falls N.Y., Detroit, and Fraser Michigan. Just -before her 32 -member senior team headed for the ice, Hcrn said they_ were hoping for a repeat of their performance at the Western Onta- rio Sectional Championships three weeks ago in Burlington; a gold medal performance. Minutes later, those hopes were realized. The fluorescent -pink cos- tumed Ice Image dazzled the' judges enough to bring in scores well above the competition. Not one score was below the 5.0 mark. Hern slipped and fell during the performance, but recovered quickly. Nearly every team suffered at least one fall on an ice surface rnany.said was "choppy". - Even considering her fall, Hern said the presentation 'felt good. I feel great." This is the first season in 10 years the Burlington club has supported a senior precision team, but the inexperience has not hurt, especially since they have qualified to attend the -Canadian National Competition in'Edmonton April.7-9. "We were surprised to get to the Canadians, considering.we're a first- time. team," said Hcrn. When asked how a first-year science student with hopes for medical school finds the time for figure skating, Hern simply said "It gets me out of the house." "I've done it all my life. 1 just couldn't all of a sudden stop," she ex- plained, adding that she can still manage the two practices a week and - extras just before competition. The Irish had lost the regular goalie Doug Haskett in the series against the Mitchell Hawks with torn knee ligaments, had no backup goalie dressed for the game and coach Dave Revington de- cided to play the last 4:54 of the game withoLt a goaltender and six skaters rather than risk further inju- ry to Judd. Neither team could score during that time although the Hawks had five shots on goal; they were all stopped by Irish skaters.
