Charterways sets record
EXETER -Docs driving around
the world 52 times' sound like an
enviable record?
That's exactly what the bus driv-
ers of the Exeter branch of Charter -
ways have done during the past
1,000 school days.
More amazing is the fact, the
1,200 school students in South Hu-
ron have been taken to- and from
elementary and high school without
a single preventable accident. .
During that time, the local
school bus drivers have travelled
more than 1.25 Million miles with
their precious cargo in all kinds of
weather without as much as a fen-
der bender.
Exctcr branch manager Ken Og-
den and his drivers Were honoured
by Charterways daring a dinner and
dance at the new Exctcr Lions
Youth Centre, Saturday night.
This is the first time any branch
of Chartcrways Canadian Division
has achieved the 1,000 day accident
free mark.
Director of traffic for Chartcrways
Murray McAlpine said, "This is a
very memorable event and will set a
goal for other branches to match".
McAlpine praised the drivers for
their proficiency, dedication and
positive attitude to their young pas-
sengcrs. He added, " Any parent liv-
ing in this community should be
pleased with what's happened here
tonight. It's a great safety record".
Canadian' manager Gary Wilson
said his company is determined to
provide the best school transporta-
.tion services that are possible.
.Huron (Board of Education trans-
portation manager Bob Cunning-
ham congratulated the drivers for an
•outstanding. achievement. He went
on to say, " We arc pleased with
your performance. It's a pleasure to
work with you. We don't receive
any problem calls from the Exctcr
arca"
While the Saturday night awards
presentation was to mark the com-
pletion of 1,000 days of accident

at 1,052 days.
Charterways of London, Ontario
is one of the largest school bus
transportation companies in Canada
dedicated to this highly specialized
field.
The company operates over 1,300
school buses out of 16 branches.lo-
cated throughout the province.
Charterways serves the needs of
some 30 Boards of Education and
transports in excess of 60,000 stu-
dent Passengers to and from school.

mately 3,000 familiar yellow
school buses.
The Charterways slogan is " We
care about kids" and a philosophy
that puts passenger safety first, last
and always.

In spite of the efforts of my fel-
low communists in Exeter P.O.; it
takes three weeks for our mail to
reach the shores of Mexico's largest
kikc, land of "perpetual spl ing". It
isn't that -it travels through.Mexico
by Burro -back, it is caused by dc-

ronto or Montreal. We get mail
from Africa in five to eight days!

excellent weekly; Mexicans, Ameri-
cans, Brits and Canadians are im-
pressed whcn i tell them Exeter is a
town of less that 4,000. Of course -

jays and cardinals joust with hover-
ing humming birds around the bird
feeder, located in a bower of purple
bougainvillia. •
The• thinking Mexicans envy
Canada's "Free Trade" 'association
with the Excitcd States. They feel
th'e sole hope of economic survival'
•in the future is to be part 'of a trad-
ing block. And they are right.
As to Canada losing its culture,
many Americans •say "What cul-
ture?". And as to becoming the Sist
state; they have enough problems
with their 50. And Puerto Rico is
first in line for Number 51.
