Hawks survive Tedford scare
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
have advanced to the next round of
the Western Junior D playoffs. But
only after surviving a first-round
scare from the Thedford Lumber-
jacks.
The Hawks had taken a three -
games -to -one lead ih their best -of -
seven North Division quarter -final
series but the Lumberjacks won
Friday and Saturday night to dead-
lock the series coming into Sun-
day's deciding game at the South
Huron Rec Centre. The Hawks got
the big game from• their key
players when they needed it the
most and won•the deciding game 9-
1.
Hawk coach Jack Nairn said Todd
Campbell's goaltending was the
key to their win.
"It's very hard for any team to
win three games in a row in the
playoffs which is what they (Thed-
ford) were up against but we got
good goaltending from Todd and
played smart and won," said Nairn.
During Saturday's game in Thed-
ford Nairn replaced Campbell with
Bill Pauli in the second period,
which was an important factor be-
cause Campbell was rested for Sun-
day's game and responded well.
Nairn said the fatigue factor could
have been a problem, playing three
games in three days, but it was the
same for both tcams, and he said
the Hawks were due for a good
game.
"We hadn't played very well late-
ly and we needed to play well and
we showed what we were made of.
We could have given up after los-
ing Saturday and didn't and that is a
real credit to our players," said
Naim.
The Hawks got good production
out of its top -scoring line' in Sun-
day night's game, something it
didn't get in the two previous
weekend outings when they lost.
The Hawks tallied twice in the
first period and twice in the second
period and were never headed as
Thedford could only beat Campbell
once, at 12:46 of the middle frame.
Jean-Paul Cousineau led the way
with a hat trick and two assists,
while !inmate Derek Shackleton
had two goals. Other Hawk goals
were scored by Jim Lewis, Dan
Naim, captain Mark Morrissey, and
Steve Dubarry.
Jim Dickins and David Dalrym-
ple each contributed three assists,
while single asgists went to Dubar-
ry, John Bell, Lewis and Doug
Clark.
The Hawks outshot the Lumber-
jacks 40-27 in the game.
JHEDFORD 7 EXETER 3
In Saturday's game in Thedford,
the Hawksstartedquickly, fell be-
hind 4-1 at one point, cut the lead
to 4-3 in the second period and sur-
rendered two late second -period
goals and eventually fell 7-3.
Jim Lewis got the Hawks on the
board quickly, at just 28 seconds of
the first period, from Dickins and
Morrissey, but found themselves
behind 3-1 after one period of play.
After falling behind 4-1 early in
the second, Nairn replaced Camp-
bell with Pauli who finished the
game between the pipes.
Shortly thereafter, Clark rifled a
slap shot behind Mike Sanders in
the Thedford net, from Jeff Ansems,

Irish take .care of Mitchell Hawks
LUCAN - The Lucan Irish have
'advanced to the second round of the
Western Junior D playoffs, but only
after weathering a stiff fight from a
tough Mitchell Hawks' team in a
physical opening -round series that
went six games before it was decid-
ed
The Irish entered the series having
won 30 of 36 games during the reg-
ular season but found their hands
full with Mitchell.
The teams split the first four
games of the series, each team win-
ning at home, before the Irish won
the fifth game at home 11-3 last
Wednesday night and 6-4 in Mitch-
ell Friday night.
Mitchell actually led 1 after one
period in Wednesday's garhe before
Lucan got their legs moving and
skated circles around the Hawks in
the second period to take a 7-2 lead
after two periods of play. The Irish
scored four more times in the final
frame while the Hawks tallied once.
Brad Muir and Colin Telford each
netted hat tricks for the Irish, Paul
Barnes picked up a pair and singles
went to Dean Schram, Rick Weish-
ar and Joe Febrey.
Captain Scott Denomy led in the
assist department with a trio, fol-
lowed by Glen Marshall, Barnes,

Mohawks finally dump .Rocks
ELORA - The Exeter Mohawks
have finally gotten rid of those pe-
sky Elora Rocks.
The Mohawks jumped out to a
three -games -to -none lead in their
Central Senior B North Division
semi-final playoff series only to
have the Rocks win the next two
but the Mohawks came through
with good efforts in Elora Friday
night and won the game 6-1 and
the series in six games.
The Rocks forced a sixth game in
the series after winning game five
5-2 last Tuesday night at the South
Huron Rec Centre.
The difference in Friday night's
game was the four goals that the
Mohawks scored in the second peri-
od while the Rocks were blanked.
The performance of the Mohawks
specialty teams also played a key
role. They scored twice on the
wer play and once while short •
The Mohawks also got a good
scoring balance getting goals from
all three forward lines.
The Mohawks scored first, at
12:12 of the opening period Friday
night. Quincy Wilker netted a pow-
er -play. goal from linemate Dave
Randcrson, but the Rocks tallied
later and the period ended in a 1-1
tie.
In the second, Wilker returned the
favor to Randcrson as Randerson
scored on thc power play with un-
der two minutes gone in the second
period. That goal turned out to be
the game winner.
Al Gates made it 3-1 when he
scored , from Ron Goodhand nearly
nine minutes into the period
Kris Bedard picked up the unas-
sisted, shorthanded goal at 13:13 of
thc second and John Kernick fol-
lowed just 46 seconds later to make
it 5-1 with help from Gord Brooks
and that's the way it stayed until
the third period.
Brooks got the Mohawks only
goal of thc final period, from Bill
Glover mid -way in the last stanza.
Randy Coverdale was the only
Rock to beat Rick Pikul in the Ex-
eter net Friday night.
Last Tuesday's game was an
evenly -played affair until Elora
broke the game open with three
sc,eond-period goals to one for thc
Mohawks. Jeff McClenaghan
scored the only Mohawks goal of
thc second period, from Wilker and
Paul Barton.
Wilker connected for a power -play
goal from Randerson and Barton at
