GRAND BEND - When one
thinks of Grand Bend most people
think of sun, sand 'and surf.
But there is more to Grand Bend
than meets the eye. There is also
plenty of bucks, big bucks. The
small resort village along the shore
of Lake Huron has seen a tremen-
dous increase in building permits
and sign permits over the last sev-
en years and it shows no sign of
slowing down. And normally new
buildings mean plenty of money
pumped into the local economy,
usually for construction compa-
nies.
In 1982, there were only 30
building permits issued in the vil-
lage. Last year that number was
more than doubled as 69 permits
were issued.
From 1982-1988, 325 permits
were issued with $12,534,902
spent in total new building con-
struction.
And with most new buildings,
especially commercial, come new
signs.. Signs arc sprouting up
along highway 21 like bad weeds.
Nearly 50 signs permits, either
temporary or liermanent, were is-
sued in Grand Bend last year, and
five have been issued so far this
year.
But there are two big factors fac-
ing Grand Bend, which will play a
large role in its future. The first is
the court case in which Archie
Gibbs is claiming ownership of the
beach from the Government pier to
Main St. Final arguments in that
case were heard in Toronto last
week and a final decision on the
beach case is not expected until Oc-
tober.
The second is the proposed an-
nexation by village council to
claim all of the shoreline areas in
Stephen Township and parts of Bo-
sanquc-t Township as far south as
Port Franks, in addition to other ar-
eas, as part of -the restructuring of
Lambton County. The first- stage
of the restructuring must be in
place for the Minister of Municipal
Affairs to rule on by April 30.
If Grand Bcnd's proposal is ap-
proved it means the size of the vil-
lage will be greatly increased,
which will mean a great boost in
the economyfor years to come.
In any cast, Grand Bend is cer-
tainly a villageon the move.
