GODERICH - The average Cana-
dian diet is relatively low in fibre.
Fibre is the part of plant material
we cannot digest and provides the
bulk we need in our diet. A moder-
ate intake of bran plus generous
amounts of water help promote
normal bowel function. Most foods
that are high in fibre are also low
in calories. So, eating these foods
offers a double bonus - you fill up
faster with fewer calories.
Ways to add fibre to your diet:
Eat more whole grain and bran
containing products every day.
These products include: brown Tice,
whole wheat or rye bread and crack-
ers, shredded wheat, bran and oat-
meal cereals. You can obtain about
one-fifth of your recommended dai-
ly intake of protein from these
sources. The whole grain cereals
also add B vitamins and iron to
your diel

ting your family moving on the fi-
bre track, there are more subtle
ways to increase fibre intake. You
can substitute up to one-half of the
flour in your recipes with whole
whcat flour or use bran, or oat-
meal, in meatloaves and meatballs
as a meat extender.
Choose fruits rather than juices.
One serving of oranges or grape-
fruit will provide you with fibre
and 70 percent of your recommend-
ed daily intake of Vitamin C as
well.

Crediton V discuss trip
CREDITON - Crediton V com-
menced its first meeting on January
6. This year's 4-H club, "The Cre-
diton Fuzz Balls" promises.to be a
huge success with two hard-
working leaders, Mary Glavin and
Diane Kaak.
All 22 members were not
present, but we enjoyed learning
the 'basics of knitting, with help
from our special guests, Lois Hod-
gins ad June Glavin. They made
learning easier and interesting.
Thanks to their teaching, we have
many promising knitters.
Our meeting progressed quickly
and we began to decide on our exec-
utive committee, Denise Hendrick
President, Jeannette Leibold, Vice -
President, Becky Hartman Secre-
tary, Nina Pritchard, Teasurer and
Keri Ruttcn, Press Reporter.
We have discussed any undertak-
ings such as a trip to Barb's Coun-
try Crafts for needles, yarn and ad-
vice on our individual knitting
projects. As we ended our meeting
with snacks provided by Lisa Gla-
vin, we laughed over jokes, such
as: a tale or story that goes on is a
yarn, and a bad character is called
the black sheep Qf the family.
As I conclude, I'd like to thank
leaders, members and guests for an
informative and interesting meet-
ing!
